A Sentence with X
As a confessed Jo Malone fan, I was naturally thrilled when I discovered the relaunch. The scent notes appealed to me, and I hoped for a reissue of the lovely "Redcurrant & Cream | Jo Malone," which I found very pleasing with its fresh berry essence.
"Raspberry Ripple" refers to a particular ice cream flavor found mainly in the UK: vanilla ice cream swirled with raspberry syrup. Sounds delicious, and so I expected a creamy vanilla note with raspberry sprinkles in this fragrance.
The packaging is really quite sweet, the bottle comes in a box with a die-cut waffle pattern and the matching light brown color, and the ribbon is also designed in the colors of the ice cream (pastel yellow and pink).
So the theme has been executed excellently, and as a little packaging victim, I am absolutely delighted as I free the bottle from its packaging.
However, the first spray quickly brings about disillusionment, as the raspberry note is unbelievably artificial and overpowering, almost stabbing in the nose. I immediately associated it with "Smile | Akro," which also failed to convince me due to its synthetic nature. Where I had hoped for creamy vanilla ice cream, there's just a sticky sweetness stomping around in the background, and I can't perceive any scent progression at all.
What I usually appreciate about Jo Malone fragrances, a certain transparency and lightness, simply British understatement, is completely missing here. It seems more like an attempt to jump on the currently prevailing gourmand trend. But good intentions don't always lead to good results, as this creation shows.
The fragrance is supposed to convey cheerfulness and summer feelings, if the product images are to be believed, but for me, it only evokes annoyance due to its intensity. Fortunately, the ordeal doesn't last long, but this summer scent was a total miss for me.
I would rather stick with my tried-and-true favorites from the brand and continue to mourn the "Redcurrant & Cream | Jo Malone," which managed to present berries in a way that doesn't drive one completely crazy.
