As a self-confessed Jo Malone fan, I was of course thrilled when I discovered the new launch. The fragrance notes appealed to me and I was hoping for a new edition of the pretty
Redcurrant & Cream, which appealed to me with its fresh berry notes.
"Raspberry Ripple" refers to a type of ice cream that is particularly common in the UK: vanilla ice cream with raspberry syrup swirls. Sounds delicious and so I was expecting a creamy vanilla note with raspberry ripples in this fragrance.
The packaging is also really cute, the bottle comes in a box with a die-cut waffle pattern and the matching light brown color, the bow is also designed in the colors of the ice cream (pastel yellow and pink).
So the theme has been implemented perfectly here and, as a little victim of packaging, I am quite happy when I free the bottle from its packaging.
The first spray quickly brings disillusionment, however, because the raspberry note is incredibly artificial and penetrating and literally stings the nose. I immediately had associations with
Smile, which also failed to convince me because of its synthetic nature. Where I had hoped for creamy vanilla ice cream, there's just sticky sweetness stomping around in the background and I can't perceive a fragrance progression at all.
What I usually appreciate about Jo Malone fragrances, a certain transparency and lightness, simply British understatement, is completely missing here. It seems more as if they have tried to jump on the currently prevailing gourmand trend. But well-intentioned is not necessarily well done, as this creation shows.
If the product images are to be believed, the fragrance is supposed to convey happiness and summer feelings, but for me it unfortunately only causes annoyance due to its penetrating nature. Fortunately, it doesn't last long, but this summer fragrance was a complete waste of time for me.
I'd rather stick with my tried and tested favorites from the brand and continue to mourn the loss of
Redcurrant & Cream, which has managed to portray berries in such a way that they don't get on your nerves.
