Sometimes more, sometimes less...
It's that time again and I'm trying to bring you closer to a fragrance I've come to love, "Just Roulette | LEN - Histoire Privée".

The first thing I did when the fragrance arrived was to look at the very nice packaging. The slipcase in which the box is kept simple despite the illustrations, the box itself is sturdy and the bottle is firmly enclosed in a cut-out, so far so good.
The bottle is kept simple, with 2 darkened glass walls on the sides (like the others in the series) and the well-fitting magnetic cap has a logo on the top. The glass feels sturdy and of high quality and the bottle has a very good sprayer with a good spray mist.

Now we come to the fragrance that is at home in this bottle.
I find the fragrance clean, fresh and summery and it is definitely unisex. The tangy grapefruit, a beautiful iris note and the woods are clear to smell and despite the linear progression, the fragrance is always pleasant to wear. But now we have arrived at the point that gives my review its title. I have to say that there is sometimes more and sometimes less in terms of durability and sillage and I don't feel as if it's due to fragrance blindness. But I accept the whole thing because I love the "Just Roulette | LEN - Histoire Privée" by now.

A small and nasty aftertaste is also the rather high price (everyone defines that for themselves) that the brand charges for the water, which I think could be improved.

All in all, a great fragrance from a brand that I think still flies under the radar of many in Germany...

Thank you for your time reading

Weak and uninspired but at least expensive....
I'm actually a friend of describing fragrances in detail and allowing the reader some participation in my subjective view of my assessment . Ahead of time, here I will keep it relatively short. I also understand that many will probably not share my opinion but I hope that I can possibly save one or the other from a blind purchase.

The fragrance is for me very strongly oriented to Terre d'Hermès. Malicious tongues would claim that it would be a "cheap" clone. I have tested both several times side by side on my arms in direct comparison. The parallels are hardly to be dismissed from the hand in the case of my arm.
I have also worn the fragrance of LEN certainly 4-5 times during the day to see how he beats in everyday life and how he cuts off against the similar "brother fragrance".

For those who do not know TdH, the fragrance starts with a very bitter grapefruit and then mixes with very masculine with woody notes. (Of course, only briefly described)
The performance and also the fragrance in and of itself are at the Hermès EDP for a summer fragrance or a fresher everyday fragrance just outstandingly good, especially if you consider the price.

The Just Roulett starts a little softer and seems a little more balanced in contrast to the TdH. But that was then also the only advantage, because after a maximum of two hours (yes two hours!) The fragrance is no longer perceptible. I applied, believe it or not, 15 sprays in one day and after almost 3 hours, neither I nor my surroundings could still perceive the scent. I mean I am already bad performance of, for example, the brand Tom Ford (the summer fragrances) used but this is another category of lousy durability.
185€ for a fragrance that offers absolutely nothing new and after two to a maximum of four hours track is smelling for me only one thing.... absolute rip-off.

May be that the brand has some great fragrances in the portfolio but the here is at least with me with kettledrums and rockets failed

Lucky Wheel
I first encountered the brand LEN Histoire Privée at this year's conference of the Federal Association of Perfumers in Düsseldorf. I was kindly invited, even though I am neither working in nor for a perfumery. During the conference, several small perfume labels introduced themselves on the sidelines, looking for new partners. Similar to the Global Art of Perfumery, which unfortunately no longer exists.

One of the labels was LEN Histoire Privée, which presented six creations at its booth. The women's perfume "Jeux Dangereux" even won the Artistic Independent Award at the Duftstars 2019 a few months later.

According to its own description, the name of the label is derived from the French soldier/perfumer Francoise de la Lenes, who stayed with the family of Count Artuchowski as a French teacher after Napoleon's failed campaign in Russia in 1812 and gifted two perfume recipes to the lady of the house as a token of gratitude.
The family was able to preserve these recipes before the Russian Revolution, emigration, and wars, and with the help of the great-great-granddaughter and founder of the label, Jelena von Olnhausen, transformed them into real fragrances. Four additional creations were then added.

To what extent this rather adventurous story is true, I cannot judge. In any case, we are dealing with storytelling here, as each of these fragrances is linked to a different country and a small romantic narrative. For example, "Just Roulette" tells the story of an Italian actor, his wife, their little daughter, and their nanny on their yacht.

You can tell it’s quite glamorous, and the perfumes are correspondingly found in the higher price segment. They have a concentration of 23 to 28 percent perfume oils as Extrait de Parfum and are elegantly designed by Thierry de Baschmakoff, the founder and designer of "The Different Company," in terms of packaging and bottle.

But now let's finally get to the scent. Just from the ingredients like grapefruit, iris, as well as cedarwood and vetiver, you can get a hint of where the journey is headed, or where the ball rolls.
If you think of Terre d'Hermès now, you are not entirely wrong. However, here we are not just dealing with a copy or adaptation, but with an exciting evolution, as the iris adds a powdery-soft counterpoint to the zesty-fruity grapefruit.
Vetiver and cedarwood also rotate in the mix and are present more quickly than officially announced, which reinforces the association with TdH.

The grapefruit note is, of course, the one that departs the fastest. What remains in the end is still a solid iris and cedarwood with a faint trace of vetiver. The moss is hardly noticeable at all.

Overall, I like "Just Roulette" extraordinarily well, even though I strangely dismissed TdH for myself over 10 years ago. But in this witty and cleverly balanced version, the theme regains its charm. By the way, I wonder if a similar effect can be achieved by layering TdH with Infusion d'Iris from Prada.

Yes - I like this almost contradictory mix, and as I saw recently at Beauty Affair in Düsseldorf, they seem to have found an exclusive perfumery that offers the complete series. I will also take another look at "She&Male" and "Try To Follow Me."

Smells like my experiments when I first started getting into perfumery. Very unbalanced, super heavy on the cedar+methyl ionone

Quite earthy, rooty iris opening (carrots greeting) accompanied by dry ISO E Super Cedar. Longevity good, sillage weak
