Orange and clove pomander amber
Laura Ashley’s “more sophisticated” scent offering, advertised as suitable for the Christmas season.
The company originally listed notes of rose, ylang-ylang, iris, bergamot, vetiver, patchouli, musk, and vanilla, an ambery oriental typical of the 1970s. It also has sweet orange and clove notes at the top, reminiscent of home-made pomanders ornaments.
When I was around 9 or 10 years old, I received a Laura Ashley sampler set of No. 1, No. 2 and Emma in miniature bottles in my Christmas stocking (it had been a free-with-purchase item for my mom, who was a Bal a Versailles devotee). When I sniffed No. 2, I reckoned that it was a sophisticated, grown woman’s scent, not unlike my mom’s signature (minus the civet and insense). I wouldn’t dream of neglecting it, however, and regularly dabbed behind my earlobes before going off to church or other dressy occasions.
