Peach-ivory Velvet
Aoud Velvet is aptly named. But don't think of a midnight blue velvet -- this is a peach-ivory velvet.

This dense fragrance opens with orange blossom and oud. The ylang and tiare, still mixed with oud, took a few moments to appear for me.

Rose is not listed above in the notes, but I would swear that there is some rose here as well. This may be an illusion, but who knows.

The vanilla softens this fragrance. Even if you are not a fan of Montale's typical synth-oud, you might like Aoud Velvet. It is one of the most approachable of the Montale Aoud line.

Your Wish Was My Command
Today I discovered a purple Montale bottle in my favorite perfumery - Aoud Velvet.
It was drastically reduced.

Greed stirred within me - Montale, purple, velvet - three magical keywords.
I still had a question mark behind Aoud.

But the first spray immediately captivated me - even though my husband took a step back.

The saleswoman's eyes widened - but I explained to her, "Migraine," which prompted her to respond with a mild, "Me too."

The scent is not subtle, and it makes its presence known - but neither shrill nor intrusive.
I was certainly captivated by it right away.
Tiare and Ylang harmonize hand in hand - lightened by the orange blossom.
Then the fragrance becomes deeply velvety with non-scratchy Aoud, soft sweet vanilla, and rounded tonka.
Sandalwood tames it in a creamy way.

A few steps further, in the chic boutique, a saleswoman rushed towards me with the breathless question: "Do you smell that good? What is it? An excellent oriental!"
She also took a step - but towards me.
I told her the name of the fragrance, and she insisted that I buy it.
At that point, she was walking through open doors with me.
She herself wanted to get it for her break - and the tempting price made her quite fidgety.

A woman, a word.
Her wish was, of course, my command, and I took the purple gem home with me.

And even my husband has made peace with it, because after the intense intro, Aoud Velvet definitely has the "will to please."

Turnaround
Aoud Velvet is once again one of those fragrances that I have issues with, because it doesn't know what it wants.

In the opening, I am greeted by a glaring, shrill floral scent. Not flattering, romantic, but almost screaming loudly. This is not my direction, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the fragrance. The floral notes are simply dominant in this scent at first. But Aoud Velvet suddenly changes its mind, becoming increasingly darker, woodier, warmer, and only a subtle hint of flowers remains. This is how I would like the perfume to be, but what is the point of the blaring opening?

I am certainly in favor of a temporal progression in a fragrance, but here it feels to me like I am putting on a jazz CD and suddenly after the first track, Vivaldi is played. The fragrance has no theme and no red thread, and I attribute this as a quality flaw to Montale.

Clean Suits, Anyone?
Aoud Velvet - how beautiful does that sound... Full of anticipation, I sprayed the fragrance, but what is this? Phew, a wave of scent hits me that makes me hold my breath at first. Immediately, my imagination kicks in: I want to send a package, it's warm outside. I open the door to the shop where I can drop off the package, and there it is, the smell! The local dry cleaner! Oh, and that very smell! The machines are running, and things are being sprayed and ironed. No, I don't want to smell like that!
Even a dry cleaner has closing time, and when the sharp odors have faded, Aoud Velvet becomes more pleasant the longer you wear it. Well, the freshly cleaned velvet suit still smells slightly of cleaning products, but a sweet floral scent slowly starts to take over. So I let the fragrance settle in. Good things do sometimes take quite a bit of time!

Classic
Thanks to dear Scarly, I received a sample of Aoud Velvet today.
First of all, I must say that I am not becoming a fan of Aoud. It’s just not my direction.

Aoud Velvet is intense, almost overwhelming, and immediately sweet-floral with this peculiar note that must be Aoud.
I still like this scent, and that lasts until the heart note. By the way, I strongly detect bitter almond with a very fruity note that reminds me a bit of Lutens Louve. The fragrance becomes quite gourmand, without the sweet flowers disappearing.

Above all, there is the Aoud, a subtly smoky note that particularly comes through well in the heart note.

In the base, however, the bitter almond scent fades, while Aoud comes through stronger and becomes more reminiscent of a floral incense stick scent for me.
I like burning incense, but only the scent that lingers in the air. I don’t like it on me.

Now the fragrance takes on an old-fashioned aura and reminds me of certain classic perfumes. The fruitiness comes back to the forefront, garnished with strong spice.

Nevertheless, I consider this scent to be very noble and above all present. Somehow, it is a work of art.

The co-chefs Ms. Tiare and Ms. Ylang aren't great at managing their staff. Their yelling has clearly intimidated Mr. Oud and Ms. Tonka.

Herb-citrusy-lightly fruity, little O-flower/Tiare. Typical Aoud + gentle-woody-soft. Becomes powdery-sweet. A beautiful unique everyday scent.

Delicious sweet Tiare vanilla. Violet flowers. If only it weren't for that oud...

A very sweet floral scent that is 100% feminine. Montale roars loudly, as usual. Not a perfume for the faint-hearted!

Pretty loud, and not at all velvet, rather harsh notes that later turn gourmand. Not bad, but it can be annoying.

Lasts for hours and smells great, the flowers and oud go well together. Unfortunately, I somehow smell like an object and feel alien to myself.

I'm undecided. The longevity is huge and the scent is too strong and aggressive for me at first. But then something beautiful comes?
