One of the Prettiest Tea Rose Out There

In China, they make tea out of rose petals, and one may assume that Tea Rose's words meant they grew these roses for making special herbal teas. It's as simple as pouring some boiling water over a carafe partially filled with rose petals and letting it steep for a few minutes. It turns out that "Tea" roses originated in China several centuries back, and they derived the name from the fact that the fragrance of the flowers reminded people of the smell of brewing tea. The original tea roses were larger shrubs with enormous flowers, which had weak "necks," so the flowers always nodded. Plaisir Dark Rose presumably features such a Tea Rose quality. So, let's see whether this perfume smells of a freshly opened packet of tea leaves, with tarry, earthy, and even a strong violet character.

Plaisir Dark Rose opens up like a giant bush of roses behind a veil of natural alcohol and fresh herbs, a tender and smooth rose water, which is almost instantly buried under a cloak of faint oud. Just slightly dark, velvety rose petals with stems, leaves, and thorns. During this phase, the scent is powerful. Crowds often describe the first blast of oud as medicinal, and that's probably accurate even if it's not exactly unpleasant. The spicy rose scent blends with a unique and slightly fresh saffron note underneath, revealing its leathery facets with a hint of alcohol. The oud is not very prominent, not too rude, just a hint in the background, but I can feel it. It is more pronounced initially and is acute compared to the deeper baritone of the oud in other creations.

The medicinal part runs out quickly, giving way to a green, floral, and slightly metallic atmosphere of geranium leaves, reinforcing the bouquet of roses. The oud softens, becomes pleasantly woody, and the rose becomes the protagonist. The heart is as welcoming as a cashmere sweater on a lazy Sunday morning in March. The oud is creamy, more like wild honey, and lacks intense, resinous, earthy, and animal undertones. On my skin, the oud remains like a whisper, a supportive presence of rose notes, even if it fades into the background and lets the flower petals shine. From here on out, it's a beautiful creamy pink with a hint of sweetness and a depth of oud. It is not a sweet, drunken rose; it is not even a musky rose that overwhelms you with its sensuality.

It is very loud at the opening, but it subsides easily and is close to me almost an hour later. It lingers all day around me, leaving such a pleasant and elegant combination of rose-oud with guaiac wood and amber. The last stage brings to light a sharper, slightly resinous, and softened wood impression by the addition of teak and old oak, cedar, and of course ambergris, which remains very delicate and light. The salty accord is unmistakably that of ambroxan. Tea rose blooms in all its beauty, neither heavy nor bold; instead, it has a light soapy vibe that I don't mind.

It's not a complicated perfume, but it smells incredible. To sum it up, one of the most sophisticated rose bouquet scents created that makes you feel like you've just buried your nose in the rose petals and then smell the warmth of oud combined with a delicious creamy note of saffron and a blend of exotic cedar, teak, and guaiac woods to complement this delightful fragrance of rose and oud. Plaisir Dark Rose creates a beautiful cloud of sawdust as it goes. The oud note has mostly dusty, woody tones that emerge during wear rather than anything associable with oud. Plus, there's a grown amber that sets a more steady pace after the frenzy of opening.
The sillage and projection aren't monstrous, but the lasting power is remarkable. An autumn and winter scent working well from late summer, with a very civilized oud and beautiful rose. A brilliant and well-crafted creation. Either way, I think one could get away with wearing this in the daylight hours, even in the spring and early summer. A rather delightful scent, suitable to wear in the office, not bothering anyone but still speaks about who you are: soft, sophisticated, elegant, and mysterious. Unreservedly beautiful, proud, and unrepentant. It is dark, spicy, and blatantly rosy. Oud gives it a much more pleasant earthiness than patchouli, so often paired with darker roses.

I based the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since April 2021.
