As the name suggests - a duck!
It was beautiful, that mandarin-fresh summer scent from Clinique! Happy for Men was optimistic, fresh, and delicious - it expressed the spirit of the new millennium like hardly any other - before September 11, 2001, and especially the bursting of the internet euphoria at the Neuer Markt blocked the happiness hormones again.

A whole decade went well, but then someone got involved. Happy for Men was reformulated so cheaply and horrifically that it can no longer be recommended today. The need is great, and finding a replacement is difficult. What about Mandarina Duck Men?

Contrary to the name, it is not supposed to be a mandarin at all, but rather a cocktail of blood orange, grapefruit, and peach that greets us first. Be that as it may, there are these moments in summer when we stand in line at the ice cream parlor. And every year there are new, great flavors - not just classics like vanilla and chocolate, but also fruity ice cream varieties for hot weather: raspberry, forest fruit, apricot, lemon, melon, and more. For inexplicable reasons, we occasionally choose such a brightly colored something - mandarin, passion fruit, or even a flavor called "Exotic." Thanks to the aroma-producing industry - such a fruit ice cream tastes more intense than what could ever be achieved with real fruit juices.

It is similar with Mandarina Duck Man. After an initial citrus note has graciously completed its work, this strange orange fruit mix reveals itself in the most artificial way. The fact that spices, along with musk and vetiver, underlie the whole thing with a certain breadth and roughness does not improve the situation. This is probably meant to justify its classification as a men's fragrance.

At least the brightly colored note has been used subtly enough to potentially dazzle the customer. I highly recommend comparing it with a truly noble mandarin note, such as the very successful Boisé from Frapin. The gap is large: noble Grand Marnier versus children's ice cream!

Okay, the comparison is a bit unfair: Frapin's Boisé is more expensive. And with its emphasis on light woods, it also does not meet the desire for a simple, fresh mandarin scent in the style of Happy for Men. However, Mandarina Duck is really not an equally worthy substitute for Happy for Men.

For those looking for a simply structured, fresh mandarin scent for spring and summer, I recommend "Mandarin" by Royall Lyme of Bermuda for the time being. It is available at a moderate price at Ausliebezumduft.

Sweet and Sour Duck
Sure, the first association with the name of the Italian bag manufacturer Mandarina Duck somehow leans towards an orange duck -
some even think two steps further to the filleted version with crispy skin and sweet-sour sauce.

However, this is not really sweet-sour in most Chinese restaurants in our regions or those that pretend to have a geographical origin (not all are actually run by Chinese, just as not all pizzerias are led or cooked by Italians); rather, they tend to be sweet-fruity or sweet-strange. Usually, the perfectly balanced amount of vinegar is missing to truly justify the name.
My mother once received a recipe from an authentically Chinese restaurant decades ago and always conjured up a sweet-sour sauce that was so perfectly balanced that both pleasantly sweet and subtly sour aspects could be tasted. The downside: since then, most sweet-sour sauces in restaurants and snack bars taste almost unacceptable to me. Ergo: I don’t even order such things anymore.

And to get back to the point or the perfume: it would have been nice if Mandarina Duck Man had not only a sweet side but also a sour one to show. Certainly, the specified blood orange comes through relatively refreshingly fruity, but unfortunately a bit too one-dimensional, too dominant, and passionless. A bit more grapefruit might have been a welcome counterpoint; the peach doesn’t necessarily improve the fragrance experience overall, but it holds back decently, so that you can rather sense it than sniff it.

Cardamom and nutmeg ensure that at least the sweetness of the blood orange doesn’t completely run amok and contribute a bit of seriousness. A few recognizable traces of vetiver shyly peek around the corner, but one shouldn’t expect too much there.

I find the mention of oud and thyme exaggerated; there’s nothing to sniff from that for my nose. In contrast, musk comes in at the end as the usual “bouncer,” making the scent a bit harsher in the late phase.

Overall, Mandarina Duck Man, like many things, is purely a matter of taste. Certainly, it has something fruity-refreshing for summer, but at the same time, it is also quite simply constructed, and one reflexively wonders if that’s all there is and if more could have been possible.

For me personally, too harmless and trivial, but I must admit that it somehow fits the associated brand image as well as the slightly orange-tinted bottle. And with a few sour splashes and more power, it could have become really interesting.

Fruit Bomb
In search of a great summer fragrance, I stumbled upon this scent. I browsed through a few online shops and then came across this fragrance. The cool name piqued my curiosity. I looked it up here and the composition intrigued me. Since I had never seen it in a store, I ordered it without testing.
The bottle is really pretty. It fits well in my collection :-)
As for the scent: The fragrance is great for warm days. The various fruits provide a wonderful freshness and create a carefree, dynamic appearance. For me, it's a scent to feel good in. Fans of citrusy fruity fragrances will be fully satisfied.
There may be better citrusy fruity scents out there. However, those usually come with a higher price tag. For a small budget, this fragrance is a fantastic summer scent. Anyone looking for a simple perfume for everyday summer use could find it here. Even though there are many fruity fragrances on the market, this one offers a great recognition value. Since it is rather an unknown scent, you will stand out with an individual fragrance. Especially online, this scent can already be found for little money.

a scent that is simply different
A very unknown but unique representative.
So special that now even big names in their new summer variants suddenly use fruits for men's fragrances.

A mixture of sparkling lemon, blood orange, a light peach aroma, leading into bitter grapefruit.
A fruit cocktail that is cooling and refreshing, making it an ideal summer scent.

Unfortunately, the male variant of the fragrance is rarely available in perfumeries or is completely unknown to the sales staff.

But anyone who is fond of the new orange and other fruit cocktails from designer labels
should give this scent a try. It is often available at a low price due to its obscurity (if it can be found at all).

Childlike Thirst Quencher
Everyone knows them, from the school kiosk, in the height of summer, with the kids' clique - the famous, almost square thirst quenchers. Lemon, peach, orange. They were just part of it, cheap & seemingly recyclable. Cult, synthetic, fruity, sugary. Tasty back then, today rather yuck. Still a great memory. Mandarina Duck Man not only reminds of the color of the fake fruit drinks, but the scent is also a summer refresher straight from the chemistry lab. Doesn’t sound good, but it’s only in the top note that it’s penetrating & harsh. After that, it’s workable. The listed oud is nonsense, but it would have been interesting. If you want a summer scent with oud, please quickly move on to the brilliant M7 Fresh.

From shampoo to cheap deodorant, from thirst quencher to Capri Sun, from Happy f.M. to Acqua di Gio - many memories come flooding back. And even if no one within a 500 square kilometer radius wears the scent: you will never feel particularly special, let alone grown-up or cool, wearing this. Still beginner-friendly, casual & surely good for a young target audience in summer. A penetrating plastic grapefruit in the top note, followed by orange, minimally spiced fruit flesh with cardamom & peach, along with soapy musk. Clean, fruity, light, sunny. Nice. Nice. Bueno. But for advanced noses, it’s as interesting as a telenovela after a Kubrick marathon.

Bottle: special, summery, fitting to the scent.
Sillage: no sillage, hardly any projection. Needs hot weather.
Longevity: a very pleasant 4-5 hours - something to be satisfied with.

Conclusion: perfect beginner summer scent - if you can still get it cheaply & don’t have too many summer options: why not?
