Addendum to the Day of German Unity
Tüff (red) by MAWA is a small German success story and now connects fragrance lovers (I will omit the feminine form here, as this is a shaving lotion) in the East (former GDR product) and West (more and more appreciate the quality).

Background: MAWA was probably founded in 1946 by M. Selinger in Leinefelde (Thuringia). Reliable sources about the person and founding legend are lacking, they can only be found on the company homepage. In 1972, MAWA was nationalized in the GDR and renamed VEB MAWA Kosmetik Leinefelde. The origin of the name MAWA remains unclear. The AI suspects a word combination from the components "MArken" and "WAren": Perhaps!
In 1990, the brand was returned to the former owners and still produces various well-known cosmetic products today, particularly fragrances such as Tüff (red), Tüff (green: unscented but with nourishing ingredients), and formerly also Tüff (blue), a light fougère scent, which has unfortunately been discontinued for some time. The company now resides almost appropriately on Ernst-Thälmann-Allee in Zeulenroda-Triebes.

The production of the shaving lotion Tüff (the term fits better here considering the affordable-rustic brand than After Shave) has been documented since 1968/69 and initially bore the name Tüff Rasiertonikum Tabacco herb: how nice! It would have been lovely to keep this nostalgic name. I simply imagine it when I use it.

Tüff was widely available in the GDR, but was also sold in the somewhat controversial Exquisit retail stores, where high-quality goods were offered at higher prices.
After the reunification, the formula of Tüff (as so often) was revised/reformulated, but it is still close enough to the original to maintain its identity. As always, it is difficult to make an exact comparison (at best with a ideally well-preserved vintage original). But who really remembers how the original recipe of Nutella tasted today?

A particular cult was the angular bottle, which is still depicted in the photo of the fragrance, but has since been replaced by a similarly beautiful glass bottle that tapers conically at the sides. I can live with this change; however, what I find hard to accept is the loss of the wonderful red Bakelite cap that adorned the old bottles (see also the photo above for illustration), while the new bottles feature a (still quite valuable) black plastic screw cap. The bottle still feels solid, heavy, and of high quality, and it brings me joy to hold it. A ritual for me every morning!

Now to the scent: The old name (Tüff Rasiertonikum Tabacco herb) already suggests it: The fragrance is oriented towards traditional tobacco scents for men, similar to its comparably venerable West brother "Tabac Original (After Shave Lotion) | Mäurer & Wirtz," but it takes its own path: while the tobacco note in Tabac Original After Shave Lotion is characterized by aldehydic-soapy nuances, with delicate lavender notes and hesperidic undertones, and has an amber base, Tüff Rasierwasser herb seems to reveal a birch tar note that gives the fragrance a rustic yet very subtle and distinguished leather vibe, beautifully rounding out the East tobacco scent. One might also suspect, as with the West brother, lavender and hesperidic notes that fit so well with men's fragrances, but here they recede a bit more into the background due to the spicy leather accents. The manufacturer specifically mentions a nourishing "herbal complex," namely chamomile flower, marigold, and woad plants, as well as menthol. However, this complex is likely to be very subtle in scent, as it is also said to be contained in the comparatively unscented Tüff (green: here notably listed as a pure care product). MAWA has been silent about the ingredients of the perfume formula in Tüff (red) for years. There is something mystical about it. Tüff smells great, but no one really knows why.

What does such a bottle with wonderful fragrance and politically unifying and caring sensitive effect cost for 100 ml? You don’t have to pay more than 5 euros, man, and if you order from the pleasantly traditional online shop, you can get the bottle for 3.80 (plus shipping costs, of course: I always order a whole case at once: it gets used up faster than you think): once again highly recommended! Not just on the Day of German Unity!

A Smile That Costs Just 2.79
I have a lot of physical contact with people in my profession, sometimes with very unpleasant, unkempt, unwashed, socially disadvantaged individuals, but one does not show this kind of aversion and simply ignores the smell.

One day last week, it happened again; two worlds collided, such a person and my dearest patient, Mr. T., were lying next to each other on the beds, with me in between. I held on for quite a while, but I noticed that amidst the rather unremarkable scents on one side, the surprisingly delightful fragrances from Mr. T.'s side were penetrating through to me. While I was almost lying on Mr. T. (while taking blood from the other gentleman), to breathe better, and with his look, I thought we had always been too sympathetic to each other, so I wouldn't ruin that, I tried to compliment him on his always well-groomed appearance and his consistently pleasant scent.

He didn't hesitate to tell me what it was and mentioned that this fragrance comes from a German family business that has been producing this aftershave in the same way for decades and is still family-owned.

He came back this week and held a semi-transparent bag in front of my face and smiled at me. When I accepted this gift without words and hugged him, he said I could stop sniffing him and start using it myself, which made us both laugh.

I have no fragrance pyramid for this, but it is mentioned on Mawa-Kosmetik that the ingredients are natural. Chamomile flowers (which I currently love), panthenol, calendula, horsetail, and woad plants, which inhibit inflammation, are mentioned. Additionally, menthol, alongside alcohol, provides the freshness, but what I can claim from my own perspective, without being able to prove it, is that it comes across as very pleasantly lemony on the skin. The longevity, let's set aside, is indeed low, especially since it is declared as a care product, not as a perfume substitute.

I also received the blue bottle for before shaving, along with the red one, but there is also a green one, which I think could provide herbal notes.
All in all, not every gift needs to be worth a mountain of gold; an aftershave from Germany for 2.79 already brings a smile to my face, thanks to Mr. T.

DDR Hairdresser, Price Level II
I only know the GDR from the stories of acquaintances and colleagues. Therefore, I find it a bit difficult with Ostalgia and the corresponding products. In Ostalgia shops, TÜFF ROT (the common name for "Tüff Aftershave Lotion Herbal") is an absolute star and is sometimes even elevated to cult status. But even in reunified Germany, you read almost only good things about this product. Since I am an absolute fan of simple shaving scents, it was clear that I had to have this little water sooner or later. Come what may.

In any case, I had great trouble getting the little water here (former border area in the West). After all, it's only about 50 km to the manufacturer's location, so it's practically "regional." But no luck; even Kaufland (which always boasts about regional products and the share of Eastern products) didn't have it in stock. Since I had already read so much about this little water, I eventually reached the point where I ordered it from the Rossmann online shop. The shipping doubled the price, but who cares! Nothing is as strong as the desire to buy a fragrance that has been simmering for some time.

Now it is finally here. Either my batch is bad, or the description "citrus-fruity" is completely off. Mine definitely smells herbal-bitter. Old-fashioned somehow. Or "old school," as they say in modern language. In no way "citrus-fruity." "4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser" smells "citrus-fruity" - this one does not. However, it could very well be the brother of the West German "CHH Tobacco," which also has a rather herbal-spicy character. Somehow, I have the image of two brothers before me, separated by German history: They are partly products of their environment, yet you can recognize their kinship at first glance.

According to my personal preference, I like to apply aftershave generously. Therefore, the sillage is probably a bit larger than normal. ;-)
In any case, today a colleague, who knows about my little fragrance obsession, greeted me with the words:
"Wow, how do you smell today?"
I quickly replied, "That's from your former homeland."
To which he said, "I knew it! DDR Hairdresser, Price Level II."
He said this, turned around, and disappeared behind his work. And now I stand here wondering whether he praised my scent or rather criticized it. I’m considering whether to bring it up again or just let it be. Hmmm ...

Later, I did bring it up again, and the awkwardness revealed itself in all its drama: He wasn't very happy with his homeland back then (rejected emigration application - you can imagine the rest) and everything that smells like the GDR to him today (in this case, quite literally) is unpleasant for him. He is also not a particular advocate of the Ostalgia wave ("I don't understand: You used to send us West packages because there was hardly anything here or it was useless, and now you're buying GDR aftershave?")

Although I actually don't find Tüff bad at all, I think I'll wear something else tomorrow.

Smello was right
As previously reported by Smello, there is an aftershave that really smells great for less than 3 euros.

Tüff Herb is exactly the type of aftershave that a man needs.
Longevity is low, sillage is also minimal, so there's no need to worry that this scent will overpower an EdT or EdC.
Also, in terms of skin-friendliness, this German shaving cult water does not cause any skin irritation.

Since Smello has already described everything necessary, I will just add that you can get Tüff at Tegut for 2.79 euros. In addition to the Herb version, there is also a blue version for a pre-shave dry shave.
However, as I am a wet shaving enthusiast, a pre-shave is not really for me.

Neither on the internet nor on the Mawa cosmetics site can you find any clues about top, heart, and base notes.

Personally, this scent reminds me of Kiton Men.
But please don't misunderstand, it is not a copy, just a well-made
skin-friendly aftershave that does not smell like mothballs.

My personal conclusion:

Design: Square, Masculine, Classic
Longevity: between Low and Medium, depending on skin type
Sillage: Low, but also intentional and good that way
Price: If 2.79 euros is too much for someone, only a doctor can help them
Availability: Online for more or at Tegut

Nature on the Skin
Due to the review by Yatagan, I had a box sent to me. The blind buy from a well-known online drugstore at a super price for ten bottles of 100ml each turned out to be a hit.

Firstly, the price per bottle is downright ridiculous. Pitralon costs more in stores, and 4711 even more so. My calculation for the blind buy was therefore, if it doesn't fit, I can still sell the stuff as exotic on the second-hand market. However, after over 3 weeks of almost daily use, it is clear: I will keep everything for myself.
I use the pouring bottles as their name suggests: Pour it on! One bottle lasts longer than a month despite daily excessive face showers. This means that with the whole box, I can easily last a full year.

Secondly, this scent does not interfere with any perfume scent. I have never had problems so far, neither with Prada's L'Homme, nor with Bentley's for Men Intense, and certainly not with Azzaro's pour Homme. Even Guerlain's Cuir Béluga, a rather fine scent, shows no impairment with Tüff No. 2.

Thirdly - and this is the genius of Tüff No. 2 - this scent also works perfectly on its own. I don't feel like wearing perfume every day, and Tüff is just exactly right for that - incredibly subtle and quietly present in the background, but incredibly strong in its psychological effect. This scent simply presents a classic masculine self-evidence that integrates completely unobtrusively into one's own personality. And the longevity easily lasts all day.

Fourthly, the stuff is effective. I am an electric shaver. One might wonder what the effort is for? Well, out of curiosity, to try it out. Then for feeling good. After that for feeling comfortable with it. And finally for getting used to it.
Even an electric shave causes micro-injuries to the skin. Tüff actually has a soothing and caring effect. The stuff delivers what the advertising promises. Although one can't really speak of advertising here, but what the manufacturer writes, namely that "purposefully selected plant-based active ingredients" "relax and regenerate" the skin, I can confirm. I've never experienced so much comfort after shaving.

And fifthly, last but not least, the scent itself: Due to the apparently high plant content in the fragrance, it feels like nature itself, which is perceived as pleasant by me and those around me, albeit almost always unconsciously. So far, it has never happened to me that this scent was disparagingly commented on or even negatively rated, as has been the case with certain synthetic bombs. The subtle unobtrusiveness may play a role here, and perhaps also a certain nostalgic factor, as the scent is classically old school. The exact fragrant components are kept secret by the manufacturer, but I smell soft, green, herbaceous, slightly sweet, and earthy notes that remind me of the forest edge, fresh hay, chamomile flowers, nuts, plants, and yes, also a bit of cold pipe smoke, but all in a concentration that only allows a hint of all that. In a modern environment, which is usually characterized by plastic, flavorings, and other artificialities, this olfactory unobtrusiveness is unconscious. If you want to receive feedback, you have to ask for it and often receive a surprised look followed by conscious sniffing attempts and the answer: "Yeah, it's good."

"Yeah, it's good." Amazingly little substantive statement for something that, for me, is one of the most exciting discoveries since I became a member of Parfumo. Tüff No. 2 is primarily a shaving water, and it fulfills this function perfectly. That this little water is also something that has brought nature back to my skin and includes a great feel-good factor, I probably won't be able to make my "modern" contemporaries understand, and therefore I wear Tüff No. 2 on me like a secret from another world.

My favorite aftershave. Since it’s been released in the new bottle, I feel like it’s lost a bit of power. Still top-notch care.

Why 9 points? The aftershave is moisturizing, nearly scentless, lasts hardly an hour, and doesn't interfere with the applied perfume.
