CRY, BABY! FROM STRAWBERRY DREAM TO FRUITY GENERIC...

I have the original bottle. This perfume is going to be re-released in September 2025 on the official site, and I’m curious how it’s going to compare. Supposedly, the notes will stay the same and the fragrance hasn’t been changed. So, what does the original vintage Cry Baby smell like?

First things first, I tried to revise the notes here, but the research team wouldn’t let me. I feel the official note pyramid from Melanie’s website is more accurate because I really can’t smell any lipstick or baby lotion; that’s just a marketing gimmick. The actual notes are pretty accurate:

Top: Milk, Strawberry, Forest Fruits
Middle: Powdery Notes
Base: Caramel, Woody Notes

This pyramid makes a lot more sense. It opens with a burst of strawberry and creamy milk, but that stage is short-lived — about 15–20 minutes. Then other fruits start to overshadow the strawberry, and a little powder starts to peek through. It smells like those candy necklaces or candy bracelets dusted with sugar. If you had them as a kid, it’s very nostalgic.

Again, I don’t detect any cosmetic or lotion notes — just sweet berry. It stays that way until the drydown, where a hint of woods emerges in the base. Very subtle. The overall quality is similar to something from Bath & Body Works — it even smells like something they’d sell, maybe a fruity body spray with a vanilla base. If I did a blind test, I’d probably guess Bath & Body Works.

I wish the milky strawberry opening lasted longer, because once it fades, the drydown loses its originality and leans fruity-generic. Honestly, it’s not worth the price unless you’re a Melanie fan or a merch collector.

The bottle, though? Adorable. I love everything about it. It’s well made, and my favorite detail is the baby-bottle-style cap and the gradient on the back that shows the perfume level: “Happy,” “Running Low,” and “Dead.” Then, when you unscrew the lid, the silver letters on top say “FU*K OFF.” I’m living for this packaging. Kitschy, but I don’t own another bottle that’s so aesthetically different and stands out this much. Haha!

Wish it was never discontinued
First thing- it is NOT a strawberry milk fragrance & never was. Since it’s gone viral and all these dupe houses are calling it “strawberry milk”, it’s gotten people going into this scent thinking it’s something it’s not.
It is a POWDERY, VAGUELY SWEET & WOODY SCENT. It is comforting and cozy also very and i mean very powdery.
It’s a lovely scent, something i dont smell everyday and havent since i bought it 2016.

Beautiful but gone
This perfume came out when I was in middle school. Because of financial issues my mom was having at the time I never had the opportunity to purchase it. Now that I am 20 I spent money to purchase A SAMPLE. How embarrassing… Anyway, it smells nice and nothing how I was expecting it to be. Very warm and comforting. Other than that, not worth $1000 unless you’re a diehard Melanie Martinez fan. Even then it’s overpriced.

powdered fruit candy
they sell these violet candies in Madrid and Toulouse that are very reminiscent of my childhood. this fragrance smells like a reinvention of that candy; it's a heliotrope candy.

cry baby opens up with a high, sweet, fresh berry scent. it's synthetic, but not in a strawberry synthetic way. it moves quickly to the following heart note, which is baby lotion, and it's a beautiful combination of strawberry milk lotion and burnt caramel. it has a gorgeous woody base, which is what i like the most about this, but it's not noticeable enough for me. i honestly wish it were more woody!

this smells like a powdered candy that was given to you by a strange old lady who collects dolls and lives near the forest. she wears tons of makeup, so much blush and powder. but she's so nice and sweet, you can't say no to the candy she offered you... it's like you're agreeing to going back to your childhood by accepting her gift. it's a sad childhood, but maybe this time you can try to make everything easier, knowing what you've experienced.

[i'm guessing any MM song name would work for a title]
i don't know anything about Melanie Martinez, her music, her as a person. pre-ordered, against my better judgment; in fact, i actually cancelled my first preorder and ended up reordering. i don't like fruit scents for the most part, nor most gourmands...but i do love lipstick notes, lactonic scents, and i thought maybe the strawberry would be tolerable alongside those other accords. i find the bottle to be SUPER cute, albeit not very classy or anything, i really do love it. not nearly as ugly as the vast majority of the overly-ornate, plasticky, cheap-looking bottles that need a year of maturation so, could be worse!

-what i was promised: powder, milk, fruit -- the notes, basically
-what i expected: baby powder cosplaying as powdered sugar on a bowl of strawberries...and MAYBE lipstick, though the existing reviews of each version are all contradictory of one another so literally who knows
-WHAT I GOT: on skin - soap! so nice! in the air is where it goes wrong for me.

when i smell it on my skin, it's really lovely. absolutely nothing like the notes suggest, which is whatever, i don't care. it's soapy and fresh, unexpected. literally like a baby shampoo or something, certainly not Johnson's. when i smell it in the air around me, it's just straight berry, like A BERRY. and...i mean, i am older, i'm not gonna say "juvenile," but...a lack of seriousness? i guess? let me put it this way: if i were out of the house and i walked past an attractive man or an enviably put-together woman, i don't want them smelling berries in my walk-by air!! not that there's anything wrong with that -- it's just not representative of me, personally. i guess there's no real way i can word that without it sounding shitty so i will leave it at that. i am admittedly not a perfumer lol, so it's my own fault that i don't understand how the fragrancy can vary SO WIDELY between skin and sillage. it's not a fail -- this was a test, and we aren't compatible. the fragrance isn't bad by any means, it's just not fitted for me. for that reason, despite its novelty and cuteness, i sold this for its purchase price. i don't want to smell like this.

also notable, if you care about integrity: this house has a problem with taking responsibility and instead blaming dear UPS for their quality control in order to circumvent making things right, only to backpedal when proof is provided, therefore displaying dishonesty in their first response, but i won't get into that. all i can say is that's not how you do things; it's 2025 and we don't shit on the people who provide services for us.

Just got the 2016 ver and it's a Creamy, fruity dream. No perfume's worth over $50, but I don't regret splurging on this

The left over milk from a bowl of Berry Berry Kix- lactonic, sweet, pastel pink. A dash of plasticky, powdery Strawberry Shortcake doll head, too!

Smells like sweet tarts dissolved in a glass of milk. Quite possibly one of the worst fragrances I've ever smelled.

Fruity strawberry on sweet milk notes, later creamy cuddly vanilla with caramel. Really lovely scent, but the bottle not so much.
