the forgotten treasure
How long had the old wooden chest been standing there, covered in a finger-thick layer of dust, while spiders spun their imaginative webs around it?
Who had packed it, carefully assembled its contents, and then never sent it?
Who waited in vain for the herbs, flowers, and spices they had ordered?
If the roof of the old trading house had not become leaky, no one would have found this old chest in the corner of the upper floor of the old warehouse.

What a surprise awaited the senses upon opening it:
Time, at its great loom, has skillfully and patiently woven a harmoniously spicy carpet from the various fragrance notes.
Patience is one of time's strengths; I wish I had more of it!
A lot of patience and craftsmanship were surely necessary to create such an opulent and simultaneously balsamic fragrance composition from the variety of herbs, woods, flowers, and resins.
Everything is intricately intertwined, woven, and grown together.

That is why it is almost impossible, and actually not necessary, to make the usual classification into top, heart, and base notes.
Of course, we can assign bergamot, sage, clary sage, geranium, and juniper berry with their familiar, fresh-spicy aromas to the top note.
But these already cross the threshold to the heart note, where the beauty of the intensely fragrant white jasmine is already waiting for them: they embrace each other lovingly!
But then the complex fabric of the fragrance notes reveals itself: woody, resinous-smoky, and balsamic, the components show themselves, and like in a skilled weaving, it is almost impossible to separate a thread/a fragrance note: the transitions are too fine, the fragrance progression is too skillfully intertwined.
Warm-spicy and slightly animalistic, aromatic and simultaneously balsamic - this is how "Wazo" presents itself on my skin!
Various resins in their full smoky beauty are accompanied by creamy white vanilla, which together with opoponax (the resin of Aphrodite) symbolizes the presence of the goddess: her warm sensuality is clearly palpable.
She entices and calls, flatters and excites: the senses are awakened!
Coffee spiced with cinnamon flirts with warm musk; a fine finale, which lays like a net over everything, is woven.
Rich and complex, "Wazo" envelops me; Meggi already knew why he sent me a sample of this fragrance creation.

It is a sensory experience when the multifaceted development of all these fragrance notes presents itself on the skin; the extraordinarily long-lasting nature allows for their full unfolding over a long period.
A work of art emerges, forming a harmonious whole from many individual parts.

To unite so many different fragrance notes into a harmonious choir is an art that Isabelle Michaud has convincingly achieved in the name of Monsillage.

I owe these fragrant experiences to a fragrance friend who believes in me more than I believe in myself.
Thank you, Meggi: you have given me something very beautiful with this sample!
Mysterious spice that warmly envelops me!

Overseas Oases
Sometimes one wonders how grotesque the confusions and mix-ups "over there" must become before the uncritical appropriation of every conceivable nonsense comes to an end here at home. For example, the whole fuss with which Christmas has been mutilated into a caricature of itself.

Nevertheless, there seem to be Klausen-inspired creations "over there" (I have never been there) that appear to me, as someone unfamiliar with the area, like oases of hope. I am aware that I am doing many "over there" an injustice; I am merely reflecting a feeling that has no analytical claim.

Montréal, specifically the home of Monsillage, may be such an oasis. One might argue that this is in Canada. However, it seems that Healdsburg in Sonoma County in northern California also belongs to this category, home to Laurie Erickson's 'Sonoma Scent Studio'. And with that, we are on topic; 'Wazo' reminds me in its presentation of 'Incense Pure' from the aforementioned studio.

What is particularly remarkable about 'Wazo' is that despite the abundance of mentioned notes, many of them can be at least traced - even without too much imagination. Nevertheless, the scent is a rounded, calmly drifting experience with a clear development and never disintegrates into individual aromas.

A hint of needly freshness, close to camphor, as well as a resin that is both bitter and sweet-smoky with a touch of sweet cookie dough. Quickly, a quietly sovereign castoreum-animalic note lifts the scent into the realm of adulthood. An idea of ambrosial sweetness dissolves upon closer sniffing into myrrh, which in turn mixes charmingly with an almost eucalyptus-like freshness. A spicy prick may refer to juniper or bitter-needle (not -almond!). Later, jasmine and a latent cheesy bergamot add a soapy touch. The latter is also the point at which 'Wazo' strays the farthest from its relative.

Furthermore, I find it quite difficult to name points of definitive similarity. A honeyed habit is somewhat more pronounced in Monsillage, although at this point, a certain inspiration from California towards Canada may have occurred; after all, neither reaches the intensity of something like '03.Apr.1968' (Rundholz) or 'Sahara Noir' (Tom Ford), being somewhat more connected to nature.

But there are important differences: In the bright-sour smoky part of 'Wazo', I feel it primarily stems from "needlewood socialization" (as in CdG's 'Hinoki'). In contrast, 'Incense Pure' - what a surprise - refers to the corresponding properties of frankincense.

Directly on the skin, I also discover hints of the promised gourmand notes after about an hour and a half: "vanilla, cinnamon, coffee" - if you will. I would have at least added over-roasted caramel. It mixes in streaks with the warm-sweet-smoky parts and is thus fragrance, not food. Moreover, our little "prick" is consistently present, see above, which acts as salt in the soup.

In the afternoon, the scent soon becomes very close to the skin, increasingly needly-resinous, the honey direction recedes. The unflagging freshness is lovely, having a liberating effect on the nose, without unleashing the biting penetrance of a bronchial cream. Only in the eighth hour can I recognize vanilla well. It is supposed to support rather than provide a genuine contribution, while 'Wazo' gradually fades away.

Conclusion: If the two present cousins were to be compared on a point, one could say that the Sonoma explores the incense from a honey base, while the Monsillage focuses on the resinous-needly aspect. Both are successful in their own right; I see the Sonoma slightly ahead, though this cannot be measured in points.

I thank Mokka for allowing me to partake in her "over there" order. At the same time, Kovex also sent me a sample - hit!

Resin? It has it.
There are people who not only whisper into the ears of moose; they are also incredibly attentive and generous. One of these ensured that a wonderful fragrance package reached me.
I will get to the contents shortly.

For a very long time, I have been fascinated by resins. Like drawn by an invisible thread, my nostrils and fingers land exactly there.
Styrax, for example, is a balm for the soul. It has a very calming, grounding scent for unwinding and meditation. The resin has a soothing and relaxing effect and is suitable for evening incense. It is helpful in times of strong psychological tension and smooths out nervous strain. Resins drive away exhaustion and irritability. So one reads. And one could now infer about my nervous constitution.
So, quiet now and hustle, you stay outside!

In the fragrance package was a sample from the house of Monsillage: "Wazo".
It begins with a golden, radiant myrrh. Not the dry, dull myrrh from "Myrrhe Ardente," which I also love very much. While that one is a soloist, Wazo emerges from the orchestra pit with everything that can be proclaimed about resin.
Gentle vanilla makes its presence known, which, to my olfactory delight, remains understated. On the skin lies pure balm: velvety, golden, softly shining, subtly spicy, with the gentlest sweetness. I cannot perceive cinnamon; I have something like a hint of coffee. All the ingredients are so perfectly intertwined that after half an hour I can no longer recognize a single one. A perfect fragrance carpet caresses my soul. And thus, calm returns - even in the scent progression.

I perceive the sillage as not strong, thus it does not enter the room before me.
The longevity is excellent at 8-10 hours.
It may accompany me to the office!

Wazo is a quality spicy, ambery scent, but feels like a 'pantry basket', the fragrance has so many components the result is more simple than nuanced.

One must be able to handle resin, spices, and smoke here. A deep golden-brown scent with a pleasant sweetness. Warms on cold days.
