Million Dollar Bill

The New Brand house is nothing new to me. I own some fragrances from this house that I bought a few years ago, and one in particular that I like is L’homme. Then I didn’t find them on the market until yesterday, when I went into an outlet that offered a wide selection of fragrances from this brand, including 1905 and Bô Rêve, which I bought. The two fragrances have a similar bottle that differs only in colour, but the essences are diametrically opposed. 1905 is an aldehyde scream, while Bô Rêve is an opulent oriental. Both have a strong character and differ from modern fragrances. If you love old-school creations, then these two fragrances are for you; otherwise, it is better to avoid them because they would pass as misunderstood.

Let’s check what 1905 is about, which announces as a powdery floral and fresh soap smell. First, the initial approach was not so pleasant, and it took me a while to get acquainted with it. As soon as I sprayed it, the fragrance opened with an explosion of soapy and talc notes. A myriad of aldehydes blends with citrus and buttery flowers making this the most synthetic part of the scent. The result is exceptionally fresh, clean and soapy as if I was lathering myself in the shower with a precious and very expensive soap. It’s granny, anything but modern, and it can smell a little dated, something I can associate with the smell of old grandma, but in common sense. That sensation that isn’t for everyone lasts a few minutes before the fizzy aldehydes calm down, leaving room for a floral and sweet note, which I associate with yellow ylang-ylang.

The heart makes me feel like a million-dollar bill. A bouquet of mostly powdery blossoms dominates the central stage with a vanillic tinge, while the aldehydes are barely perceivable. I don’t know which flowers are in the concoction, but I get sensual jasmine, dusty iris, a tender rose, and planty of sweet-sour ylang-ylang. That bouquet reinforces the soapiness that is present in the opening. I must point out that the heart notes have the most feminine inclination, with a baby talcum touch, which can sometimes give a cosy and soapy aroma.

The base is warm, woody, musky, and wonderfully mossy. I enjoy the lush and creamy scent that makes me think of sandalwood, a salty amber shade and vibrant dustiness still present from the heart notes. Instead, from the first opening notes on my skin, I perceive more and more the darkness of a smoky and resinous chord of incense; it harmonises with the aldehydes, exalting them. Occasionally it peeps out but shows itself in all its splendour in the last act. And it is precisely this incensed aspect that convinced me.

Best used during warmer weather, spring and fall seasons, on business and leisure occasions, 1905 is a sufficiently long-lasting perfume with a moderate performance which isn’t too bad for cheap perfume. One of those scents doesn’t scream and fill the entire room. For me, it is almost a delicate scent of skin. Unique, I don’t think I have any perfume in my vast collection that smell like this.

I base the review on a 100ml bottle I have owned since September 2022.
