A Calm Day at the Sea
Finally vacation. Alone. The urgent need to escape from the stress and hustle that define everyday life during the week. I have rented a room in a small guesthouse in Brittany, slept well, and now come out of the bathroom freshly showered. In my bag: Perle Rare Homme Black Edition.
The glass bottle covered in leather, with its rounded edges, feels heavy in the hand and looks absolutely elegant. On the leather, there is a silver plaque with the perfume name that stylistically unconsciously reminds me of the design of the L'Oeuvre noire series by Kilian, but well, at least a different font type is used. Minimalists among us would probably have done without the additional information regarding the alcohol content or the quantity indication. But that's nitpicking at a high level, as it is still an eye-catcher. Now it’s time to get to the point, and I quickly remove the heavy cap with the Panouge logo from the bottle. Time to spray!
Oh dear, what is that? A Hubbu Bubba citrus variant as the top note? It’s high time to lower the visor, but it’s already too late; the scent has settled in. Irritated, I take a look at the fragrance pyramid: bay leaf, basil, apple, lime. Aha. I had imagined the combination to be somewhat different. Maybe it’s just time to step outside. What does the weather report say? Alternating sun and clouds; it has definitely clouded over now.
After an hour, the initially quite strong sillage weakens, and the scent becomes more pleasant. About three quarters of an hour later, not only does the sun come out, but I also quite like the aquatic heart note; now Perle Rare Homme is even starting to score points. After 3 hours, everything smells nice and fresh, the juniper berry dominates and gives the fragrance its character. As luck would have it, I have arrived at a bar. Perfect, I suddenly have an incredible craving for gin and tonic, I sit down on a chair, order, and gaze at the sea. Off-season, it’s nice and quiet, only the waves are crashing in the distance.
The scent shifts again, almost a pity, it’s heading towards a spicy warmth as evening approaches. The subtly sweet guaiac wood harmonizes wonderfully with the lavender, the tonka bean with the amber, I can’t perceive the oak moss. However, I do notice a neat Frenchwoman next to me, tastefully dressed, with a simple pearl necklace around her neck. Very elegant. We start a conversation, engage in a bit of small talk, and toast with another glass of gin and tonic. But I don’t know, is it my French, am I still not relaxed enough, quoi que ce soit, somehow the spark just doesn’t quite jump! Later she says goodbye, and I fancy I see a slight disappointment in her gaze. What a shame. Missed opportunity. It just wasn’t meant to be. My eyes wander to my glass, empty, then to the distant horizon. I ponder the question of whether men could possibly wear pearls. But actually, the answer is already clear before the question is even spoken....
...but the bottle is really pretty.
