Growing Pains

Today I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who was struggling with balancing his ego in the midst of developing a particular skill he wished to attain. Ultimately we concluded that to successfully nurture this skill, it was necessary to willingly accept the pain that accompanies the development of this skill, along with the humility that pain brings from realizing you weren't as bulletproof as you thought you were. To grow, you must be tried by the fire and melted down, so you become moldable... to be shaped by the process, into something new, something better. This fragrance taught me this today.

I don't like this scent at all, to be honest... and I honestly find Homa much more vivid than this...kaleidoscopic even (as a caveat, I don't like Homa either...but I can appreciate it for what it is). Homa breathes like you and I, It's alive...Aksum is like a painting of Homa, done by that street artist who does those funny self-portraits of people...Homa partook, sat by, and allowed one of those artists to paint him, and when they showed the portrait to him...it was Aksum. Those are always entertaining, fun, and in the moment worth the price of admission...but still just end up being something you do for laughs... or on vacation or a date to fill the time between two activities; you're not taking it home to hang on the wall nor does it get a gallery spot at an art museum, there just for fun... that's Aksum.

Sorry about that, it's not the real point of this; take that allegory as the review for Aksum but stay for the other life SH** if you want lol. So after that conversation with my friend, I started assessing how I've been experiencing fragrance recently and just my place in this hobby... and I realized something. Not continuing to experience scents like this ultimately handicaps my ability to enjoy other scents down the line. Challenging, unsettling, unabashed fragrance experiences like this mold, develop and prepare you for the scents you will one day come to love down the line. It sets the stage for that moment we all in this community are constantly after...encountering that fragrance that takes us to a higher plain...the transcendent one... but I'm realizing without subjecting yourself to experiences like this you'll never get there, you'll never encounter that fragrance without ones like this. And people will acclaim these scents as "masterpieces" because they helped break that wall down from them. When maybe it was more like a doorway than what's actually behind it. Is there ever anything behind it? IDK... that's your call to make...

So, I realized that Just smelling and using fragrance for what it can do for you...is just a fraction of the journey, some scents are meant to push you to new plateaus in your journey. Face those challenges (and challenging fragrances) try and understand them, face them head-on, and you'll grow from that. That pain will ultimately bring you to your peak, it facilitates your growth in this hobby and life in general.
