Growing Pains
Today I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who was struggling with balancing his ego in the midst of developing a particular skill he wished to attain. Ultimately we concluded that to successfully nurture this skill, it was necessary to willingly accept the pain that accompanies the development of this skill, along with the humility that pain brings from realizing you weren't as bulletproof as you thought you were. To grow, you must be tried by the fire and melted down, so you become moldable... to be shaped by the process, into something new, something better. This fragrance taught me this today.

I don't like this scent at all, to be honest... and I honestly find Homa much more vivid than this...kaleidoscopic even (as a caveat, I don't like Homa either...but I can appreciate it for what it is). Homa breathes like you and I, It's alive...Aksum is like a painting of Homa, done by that street artist who does those funny self-portraits of people...Homa partook, sat by, and allowed one of those artists to paint him, and when they showed the portrait to him...it was Aksum. Those are always entertaining, fun, and in the moment worth the price of admission...but still just end up being something you do for laughs... or on vacation or a date to fill the time between two activities; you're not taking it home to hang on the wall nor does it get a gallery spot at an art museum, there just for fun... that's Aksum.

Sorry about that, it's not the real point of this; take that allegory as the review for Aksum but stay for the other life SH* if you want lol. So after that conversation with my friend, I started assessing how I've been experiencing fragrance recently and just my place in this hobby... and I realized something. Not continuing to experience scents like this ultimately handicaps my ability to enjoy other scents down the line. Challenging, unsettling, unabashed fragrance experiences like this mold, develop and prepare you for the scents you will one day come to love down the line. It sets the stage for that moment we all in this community are constantly after...encountering that fragrance that takes us to a higher plain...the transcendent one... but I'm realizing without subjecting yourself to experiences like this you'll never get there, you'll never encounter that fragrance without ones like this. And people will acclaim these scents as "masterpieces" because they helped break that wall down from them. When maybe it was more like a doorway than what's actually behind it. Is there ever anything behind it? IDK... that's your call to make...

So, I realized that Just smelling and using fragrance for what it can do for you...is just a fraction of the journey, some scents are meant to push you to new plateaus in your journey. Face those challenges (and challenging fragrances) try and understand them, face them head-on, and you'll grow from that. That pain will ultimately bring you to your peak, it facilitates your growth in this hobby and life in general.

The Prin Summit
This review is long due, but it needs to be done, as this is one of the most perplexing, unique, and mind-bending perfume compositions that I have ever smelled, and I have smelled many. If I want Prin Lomros to be remembered for only one creation, it would be the original AKSUM. If there will ever be a Prin Lomros section at an Olfaction museum, I want this to be the only piece in that collection. If there is one Prin that set the bar, it was this. Whenever people ask me, what's the Prin to try, I always put this one as a first, although I realize most people will never get to experience it. I never use the word masterpiece, but this is a masterwork perfume to me.
But first things first, I'm talking here about the OG AKSUM that came out in 2017 and was only sold through Bon's shop, in Thailand, as a limited edition. I think there were like 60 bottles made, and they went fast. Not the re-released, the reformulated version that Prin made due to high requests and sold afterward to people asking for it. That's a shadow of what this beast was created to be. The original, was at the time, an absolute madness, a real experiment. He managed to source some really amazing absolutes, as well as an amazing Wild, 60-year-old Indian Oud oil with a unique profile, and he decided to put it all on the table with AKSUM. At the time, it was unheard of, even today, it smells unlike anything out there. The OG was almost entirely natural and was compounded at around 45-50% concentration. This stuff is so viscous that if not sprayed for a long time, it clogs the pump and the atomizer. It doesn't spray, it rather squirts perfume. In terms of ingredients used, the oud used, and the concentration, the second version of AKSUM is quite a letdown if you ever tried the OG. It is much lighter and feels like an EDT by comparison, the oud is much inferior, I believe it is a Trat Oud, and I think there are more synthetics used. Telling them apart is quite easy though, especially if you ever smelled the OG.
The OG came with the classic Pryn Parfum cardboard box and had the batch code LT010617, which was only available to purchase from the Pryn Parfum website for about 550 USD, the atomizer is a black color like all old Pryn Parfum bottles, the perfume is very dark, can't see through, and incredibly viscous, almost like an attar. The reformulated one was sold privately by Prin himself, I think for around 350 USD, it is much lighter in color and less concentrated, and most of them, or the ones I've seen, have a silver-grey atomizer. But of course, the smell is rather different, and the most striking difference is in the profile of the Oud used. I never got the HOMA and AKSUM comparison, to me they smell very different, but I think the new AKSUM does smell much like HOMA, whereas the OG smells nothing alike.
Now that I got that part out of the way, what does AKSUM smell like?
This is one of those perfumes where the individual notes work together to create a flume, an overall accord, and it all comes together as a whole. Trying to pinpoint notes in this one is futile, and unnecessary. I'll never forget the first time I smelled this. I could have never imagined myself wearing something like this. It didn't smell like perfume, it smelled alive. The first thing that came to mind smelling it, was a cave. A dark, wet, soil-like, earthy, cave smell. Inside, a bunch of natives are preparing animals for a sacrificial ritual, burning all sorts of incense, while the smell of goats that are about to be slaughtered is discernible in the air. Nice picture, I know. It still makes me picture that, even today, but I came to accept it. I'm part of the ritual now. It is a primal, raw, animalic smell. It's not animalic in the sense that it's dirty, like some of his work. Quite the contrary, it's not that dirty. It's animalic in the sense that it smells like nature. Unfiltered, raw nature. Old world smell. And by that, I don't mean the 19's, or the Dark Age, I mean freaking prehistoric times. I'd imagine that smells like these would be encountered in Ancient Greece. Rocky terrain, goats roaming around, incense burned for the Gods. That sort of Old World smell. The Oud that he used here is truly exceptional, and the absolute ENGINE/CORE of the perfume. It is an Indian Oud that has this most exceptional earthy-mineral and chocolaty aroma, together with the more common leathery profile of those ouds, but no fermentation or cheesy aspects whatsoever. Another note that is easily identifiable is the goat hair tincture, and then some spices, mostly the tumeric, the cumin, and the immortelle, hay, and olibanum. I'd call this an Oud perfume, as the Oud is the star of the show, and it really helps to build the entire composition around it. But again, here, the notes are not important, but rather the outcome of it all.
Truly one of the most exceptional, boundary-pushing, and experimental perfumes that have ever been created, and the one I believe Prin should be remembered for.

Over rough and smooth
The sale ends for today... I've taken enough and my goods are running out Slowly I pack my things and leave the market place. The way home leads me like every day through our small dry walkways. Past the small chapels from which the delicate incense mist reaches my nose. My way crosses the area of the wealthy merchants, here too the scent of their wealth does not escape me, with their tempting spices and their so completely different incense. An incense so deep, so dark and so sublime.
The last steps follow until I finally arrive home. Past the Immortelle and the little rosebushes... Finally I see my little hut in the distance, next to the wonderful dragon tree, which was there long before me... I don't know if it was planted by my ancestors. But what I do know... It brings me luck and good fortune, because now and then it shares its fruit with me... These fruits are worth much more than my other goods in our trade market. The merchants outbid one another in buying these berries. They tell me they are good for medicine, for dyeing things. I cannot do anything with such things.

I am a goatherd, like my father before me and my ancestors. I live and enjoy my life as I lead it. It is a family tradition and for me it is holier than anything else -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------br />
Prin has created an incredibly beautiful fragrance with Aksum in my eyes.
A wonderful resinous scent, which in my eyes has no equal. It has so much to offer:

From its smokiness of the various finely tuned incense types, to the resinous notes and dry floral meadow. Finally, a special setting was created for oud, which is completely different from the typical oud paths.
There is always a light animlic note that resonates. I personally perceive this as beautiful. It is also not comparable with the animalistic of a "mriga", which is also wonderfully realized. In this fragrance I find it to be much softer. Goat's hair is certainly there, but it is a clean goat, not an unkempt one ;)
This fragrance is wearable for me at any time of the year, I even find it relatively refreshing on this day.
Now of course I am even more excited about "Aran", which also contains goat hair and is from Prin.

Is Aksum a must-have?
I would say yes, at least to the people who appreciate Prin's work. The only downside would be price $520 for 50 cc's...
Well, let's see... Every now and then your wallet has to bite the bullet ;) So the time will come sometime.

Thanks to the dear Caligari, for the test copy of this wonderful fragrance.

P.S. AdAstra72, I once used your motto as a hashtag ;)

Aksum is a masterpiece. Animalic and slightly barnyardy, herbal, earthy, smoky and resinous. Challenging but well-balanced and addictive.
