Insights from the honeycomb
A fragrance without reviews and statements, but with a 9.6 out of 5 ratings? From a brand I've never heard of and which I found on my last order for €9.95? Can that be right? So I put it in my shopping cart and ordered it, it was worth it. Here is the experience report:
Black Dust starts with a full load of sweet tobacco and beeswax, a note that I have never smelled in a perfume before and which is framed very appropriately by the honey. These three notes can already be detected when smelling the spray head and can be easily distinguished from one another. Fortunately, the fragrance does not drift into synthetic chaos, which is unfortunately far too common in fragrances in this price category. At least on my skin, I don't notice any oud or rose, but I do notice sandalwood, which gives the fragrance a clear oriental touch with a noticeable heaviness, especially in the first few hours, but without making it overwhelming. It is probably also responsible for the creaminess that becomes noticeable in the drydown. Also worth mentioning is a certain menthol-like note, which is present at the beginning, but quickly disappears and is neither disturbing nor missed in any way. You shouldn't expect a great progression here, but in the drydown the amber begins to take center stage and, together with the sweetness of the honey and the aforementioned creaminess, remains until the end, while the rest becomes quieter and quieter and gradually disappears. Overall, Black Dusk is aimed more at an older audience, it is not the typical youth to mid-30s fragrance in my eyes.
I think the bottle is very successful, especially in this price range: A sleek, matte black cube that carries some weight, doesn't feel cheap and is reminiscent of Encre Noire except for the cap (which is round and silver here). Perhaps half of the text could have been banished to the underside, but I know of much lower-quality perfume bottles with much higher prices. The highlight, however, is the spray head: no wobbling, no leakage, no water pistol, but a fine mist with sufficient volume, without half of the spray passing the targeted body part on the left and right. For me, it really does rank in the upper mid-range for - once again - €9.95. Certain premium manufacturers in particular have to put up with questions about this quality.
Of course, Black Dust is overvalued here with 9.6 (as of February 2024) and a H/S of 9.3, but not as much as I had feared when I ordered it. I was particularly surprised by the clear differentiation of the individual notes (except for rose and oud, which don't play a role for me at all). It also lasts a good 8 hours, with 3 hours of very decent radiance, without immediately filling the whole room (with 4 sprays on the forearm). If you like the notes mentioned or would like to have a beeswax perfume in your collection, you can buy it without thinking, the performance offered here is well above the price.
