A Thank You!
Sometimes you need a different perspective, an outside view on things to understand them and see them from a new angle. I felt this way with the fragrances from Roads. If Ergoproxy hadn't gifted me this scent, I would have hardly noticed the brand, which is far removed from classic fragrances. Upon closer inspection, this scent contains everything I appreciate: a long-lasting opening with bergamot, fir balsam in the heart, one of my favorite fragrance notes, and finally a base of oak moss and vetiver, which is quite traditional and classic after all. Yet everything feels so new, olfactorily situated between oriental and occidental, that I truly enjoy this scent. Additionally, there is a bottle that is beautifully simple, and a name that is a bit confusing and leaves me questioning: a clockwork?

Thank you very much!

Thank You, But No Thank You!
I’m open to a lot of things. I also like to test things (not just “something,” but often a lot!), I’m flexible, I understand fun (yes, even olfactory) and can adapt to many situations - but even I know my limits.
And as if I had sensed it, Clockwork happened to be the last fragrance from the Roads line that I tested. After that, I was done.

My experiences with the Roads fragrances have overall not been very positive. The scents are sometimes okay, sometimes very trivial, and sometimes very “fragmented”; they often smell neither homogeneous nor like they were made in one go.

However, Clockwork somehow crowns the whole affair.

The opening alone nearly drives me to give up immediately and flee to the nearest place with water and soap. Clockwork starts off quite cool, green, and smoky. That wouldn’t be so bad if the cool green didn’t come from the immediately noticeable fir balsam and the smoky note was created by nutmeg and pepper. Overall, it smells like certain places do at half past nine in the morning after you’ve thrown out the last visitors along with their leftover drinks and half-smoked cigarettes. Since Mr. Clean unfortunately had the day off, one quickly grabbed the bath foam that smells so nice of pine needles and turns the water a toxic green.
In short: The whole thing results in a combination of cold cigarette and pine needle bath water. Why anyone would want to smell like that is beyond me.

Since I don’t dare to bring my nose to my wrist for the next 80 minutes, I must briefly hit the skip button. The journey between the heart note and base note becomes more bearable anyway. The “smoky note” dissipates, the fir balsam becomes more resinous (and no, the scent isn’t to blame for my aversion to resinous things) and oak moss gives a slight depth, while vetiver slowly becomes noticeable and makes the bath water a bit greener.

However, that doesn’t really save the fragrance anymore. Terrible, really terrible, all of it.

Much has been speculated here about the names of the fragrances. Perhaps the creator was watching Clockwork Orange when the idea for this scent came about.
I could understand that.

Even an ogre has to start small!
Mhm, how do I begin?!

Since "Clockwork" didn't have its own comment yet, this should be my first test of the Roads series, so: freshly sprayed!

Once the initial alcohol cloud dissipated, I was hit by a full blast of bergamot and nutmeg, supported by a decent amount of pepper. I couldn't detect any lemon, but this little guy was edgy. Edgy and very present, bam, here I am - and now?! Before I could think of an answer, the cheeky little fellow was somewhat tempered by the green-juicy violet leaf. Cedarwood and, in my opinion, sandalwood give it depth, while the fir balsam is probably just the transport medium to ensure Clockwork reaches where it wants to go. Gradually, the very nice base develops, fortunately without any kind of sweet vanilla, but with a triad of amber, oakmoss, and vetiver.

Mooooooooment, now I finally remembered what I had been thinking about the whole time during the test: Vetiver Ambrato by Bois 1920! My ogre scent! The big Shrek has had a son! He’s not as complex and worldly-wise as his father yet, but he's on a good path. How did my beloved say today? "Mhm, it smells so good here, I know this scent?!"

The sillage isn't quite as gigantic as with Vetiver Ambrato, but the longevity is decent; I can still perceive it after more than 15 hours.

But what the name is supposed to mean? No idea!

Nutmeg and black pepper bomb with a clean woody/amber base. Mediocre and emotionless, like everything else I've sampled from Roads.

Reminds me of men's fragrances from the transition between the 70s and 80s and could delight vintage fans! Great!

Successful combination of lightly smoky spices, distinct fir, soft wood notes, and a mossy sweet-balsamic base. Quite classic.

I should actually like it. But Clockwork feels unfinished, unbalanced, and rough to me.

Crunchy, resinous, mossy, striking - yet I still feel very uncomfortable. For days when your mood just won't lift anyway.

Dull, somewhat unhealthy, a bit morbid, then a pale vetiver decides to come to light.

Pale, beige wood-smoke scent, reminiscent of "Les Heures de Parfum - XIII: La Treizième Heure", just a bit shyer. Still, the expectations...

Hair spray with color, smells like that for kids on Halloween. So does my dentist's office.

I would have guessed ripe lily and ylang-ylang, a note that's also in Lys Carmin, but this one is more robust and resinous.
