Looking For Something Entirely Unique And Pleasant Smelling? Look No Further...
Romeo Gigli Uomo opens with a blast of nose tingling aldehydes and lime-like herbal tarragon with hints of bitter orange and plum. As the scent enters the heart phase, the composition becomes very complex, making identification of individual notes difficult. The tarragon remains in a more subtle state joined by slightly earthy patchouli and a handful of very light aromatic herbs, spices and florals. During the late dry-down the composition remains highly complex but relatively dry amber and soft woody notes are detectable in the mix, joining ever so slightly animalic civet from the base, and the remnants of the patchouli as the earlier starring tarragon completely disappears off radar. Projection is very good to excellent and longevity is very good at 11-12 hours on skin.

Describing Romeo Gigli Uomo is quite tough. The aldehydes and lime-like tarragon were extremely easy to identify early as was the gorgeous underlying plum note initially detected, but apart from those the rest of the notes are difficult to pick out. I almost get a kind of slightly floral and herbal ginger beer soda-like vibe with the overall heart accord, but that does not come close to doing the fragrance proper justice as the accord is quite unique (in a very good way)... I am having a devil of a time describing *what* I am smelling, but I have no reservations in saying whatever it is, it is quite pleasant and very much up my alley. I will also respectfully disagree with other reviews that call this an overly sweet scent, as that description does not jive with my experience on skin. Aromatic absolutely, but not really sweet to my nose. The bottom line is the regrettably discontinued Romeo Gigli Uomo is a fabulous quality scent that is one of the most innovative and pleasant smelling I have sniffed to date, earning an "excellent" rating of 4 stars out of 5. Aftermarket bottles are getting scarce, but a few can still be found at relatively affordable prices if you look hard enough. My advice to demanding collectors seeking something that smells great and truly unique is to hunt one of them down before prices rise further.

Cinnamony and floral
An interesting opening; huge tarragon with plum. It soon turns cinnamony and floral. Eventually it progresses to a woody amber with vanilla and patchouli. I'd have preferred something in the dry-down to tip the scale away from sweetness (an animalic touch maybe?), but this was launched in the early 90s when the market was diving head first into that. Complex for sure, and very good, just not for me.

Projection and longevity are great.

Complex aldehydic spice collection with fine, Italian-stylized forest flair
Once again, a buried Italian from the early 90s (stylistically: the plump 80s), which hardly any of the younger generation will get to know today.

Once again, one that makes you ponder over the endlessly long ingredient list, wondering which notes dominate the nasal passages and in what combination.

In any case, it is multilayered and voluminous, without being heavy or even cumbersome, which can be noted after just 10 minutes.

The aldehydes bring freshness, surrounded by a rich variety of very well-coordinated aromas: spicy tarragon, a hint of plum, invigorating citrus bursts, sweet honey, and already a distinctly noticeable hint of freshly cut fir trees wafts around.

I can't think of a similar scent right now; back then, a perfume territory was distinctly marked olfactorily, and all the other fragrance hounds knew what was what and sought their own territory, well aware that clumsy imitation would be anything but masculine.

In the heart, clove and an increasingly dominant, extremely harmonious and pleasant fir take over the fruits of the opening, remaining clean and well-groomed thanks to the aldehydes and benzoin, without ever becoming rough.

It becomes increasingly woodier and mossier after 45 minutes, with - we wouldn't be in the waning 80s otherwise - vanilla, tonka bean, and remnants of the mid-phase honey keeping the tension high and providing complexity and volume.

This is yet another unnecessary dead one that could show the youngsters where the bear gets its berries.

A bit of everything, but little of it
Other times - other customs: Romeo Gigli's Uomo is still very much rooted in the 80s or even earlier times. Its composition features an abundance of notes that can be overwhelming at first. Nothing definitive can be determined; it's a bit like perfume itself!

Only gradually does a vague character emerge: This Uomo is relatively light-footed, as indicated by the citrus opening. But then it gets really tricky: one gets only a hint of everything, perhaps a very subtle aldehyde accord, something resinous, and a tonka bean, as we hardly know it in this restraint from today's perfumes. Furthermore, you will find here those notes that you wish to discover.

Therefore, I find it difficult to even attempt a rough fragrance classification. To label Romeo Gigli's Uomo as Oriental, Oriental-Spicy, or perhaps even Oriental-Chypre conjures up notions of heaviness and opulence that would not be justified. It is a light, but by no means banal perfume that perhaps spreads more of an indeterminate aura than a scent and primarily resists a concrete definition of a "style." While a certain sharpness prevails directly on the skin, this Uomo presents itself in projection and in the evolving scent profile as rather soft and delicate - almost a cuddly fragrance.

Seen in this light, it was a good choice for its time for anyone wanting to avoid a clear statement. With Romeo Gigli, one was well-dressed, but one could probably be sure not to be addressed about it by others. The possibly existing softness and certain delicacy give this all-rounder a preference for relaxed situations - more weekend than office.

Twenty years ago, when Romeo Gigli's Uomo was available, I didn't even notice it. Even then, there were significantly louder perfumes that flaunted their respective uniqueness. Pure background perfumes have always had a hard time.

Like a Good Stew
Mom's good stews. Whether potato, lentil, or pea. A variety of ingredients go in, it smells good for a long time, and when it finally comes time to eat, it tastes heavenly, yet you can't pick out all the ingredients no matter how hard you try. And you don't really want to, the main thing is that there's a second helping!

With Romeo Gigli per Uomo, it's quite similar. There is an almost overwhelming variety of ingredients here, reminiscent of being a child in the 1980s. At first, the aldehydes captivate you, as they form a certain "spherical" framework to which all the other notes are attached. Fresh notes follow, very light, as well as fruity accents. Then it suddenly becomes spicy, woody, and resinous, yet everything remains very composed and airy light. Sweet, soft tones follow after a few hours and round it off nicely.

It reminds one of a late spring vacation in central Italy. An ancient cultural landscape with plenty of old trees and extensive vegetable and herb gardens, when the morning dew of the night evaporates and the heat of the day is already hinted at. A liquid that has absorbed countless old essential oils and is now releasing them into the air. Along with the wafting of sun-baked earth. It smells of age and timelessness, and just a little bit of vacation.

It's time to travel to Italy again and search for this scent in small perfumeries. Because just the bottle is a real eye-catcher. The unnatural green color with the burgundy stopper and the wire mesh as a closure. All of this packaged in a purple box. What color symbolism might be behind it?

An old and multifaceted Italian fragrance, simply delicious! And there are indeed many delicious stews in Italy...

Wonderful complex spicy woody frag, fresh and warm at the same time. The cinnamon note is excellent. One of my favourites from the 90s.

At first, a dark glass green, mossy old-school scent, then it unfolds into a cinnamon-infused, green floral plantiness. (Vintage Mini)

Genius bottle with a green-spicy scent. Then pleasantly soft in the dry down. It's a shame this amazing fragrance has been discontinued.

One of those gems from the 80s/90s, an incredibly beautiful blend of cinnamon, woods, soap, and a slightly classic note, wonderful!

Powdery, balsamic spice brew from the 90s. I found it and still find it great, elegant, and unique. Awesome.
