Atypical Woman
Rykiel Woman: 'Not for Men!' it says.
But don't get it wrong, this is no ordinary feminine.
It's a floral, with a sort of pink lychee and silky jasmin, but there's also dry-woody incense and pink pepper which are typically from the other side of the aisle.
Under this strange pair there is sweet leathery cardboard, again giving off mixed messages.
Put it all together and you have something like Lalique pour Homme Equus, but pink - and made for women.
So when Rykiel say 'not for men', I wonder, is this tongue in cheek, or is it a disclaimer to what feels like an act of subversion by Anne Flipo.
If the idea of sweet incense or dry fruity-flora is your kind of thing, forget about labels and try this - if you can find it, whether you happen to be femme or homme.

Shapeshifter
Nose Anne Flipo composed both Barbara Bui Le Parfum and Rykiel Woman, and these two fragrances bear more than a passing relation to each other (that is, they're almost identical). To my mind, Rykiel Woman is the better executed version -- the ingredients smell more expensive in it than in Barbara Bui, an you don't get the big whiff of alcohol that you get at the top of the latter. Both scents are discontinued. Oddly, however, Barbara Bui is the fume with the cult following that draws the big bucks online, while Rykiel Woman can be had for relatively cheaply. It's the one to buy.

Paleolithic Perfume
Perhaps it is partly due to the Bedrock-inspired packaging, but RYKIEL WOMAN strikes me as eccentric enough to have been a bespoke perfume commissioned by either Wilma Flintstone or Betty Rubble. It really is both odd and rough-hewn. One thing is clear: it smells like no other perfume familiar to me.

The combination of dates—which smell more like burnt sugar here—and leather, produces a serious source of discord in this composition. It may be an acquired taste, so I'll have to wear this perfume some more in order to decide whether it is ingenious or just a mistake, better suited to the wife of a troglodyte than to someone like me.

Anne Flipo created RYKIEL WOMAN, which provides me with some motivation not to simply give up, and I'm certainly not going to be parting with this wild box and bottle anytime soon. I especially like the pseudo-gold-pebble-encrusted cap, the pattern of which is reproduced on the front and the back of the box as well. Pebbles, lest we forget, was the daughter of Barney and Betty Rubble! Moreover, a version of this very landscape-inspired pebbled pattern may well have used by some of Bedrock's haute couture dressmakers, who, as we know, were frequented by both Betty and Wilma.

Other reviewers, now apparently devoted to RYKIEL WOMAN (one reports having bought out the 13 bottles of remaining stock at a store where it was being discontinued!), have expressed confusion with their early experiences of this perfume as well. Perhaps, then, there really is some method to the neanderthalic madness—the apparent cacophony of what seems to me even after a few wearings to be a fairly random assortment of heavy-handed notes.

A date and leather fragrance your wallet will love.
I can sometimes be a fragrance snob, and I had my doubts about Rykiel Woman. How good could it be for that price?

The pepper provides interest throughout, and the violet, rose, and jasmine are soft, yet rich and womanly, while the date is sweet, and more pronounced as a note than the florals. But it is the underlying leather that really grounds this fragrance, and gives it dimension.

Rykiel Woman is not an assertive fragrance, and it stays close to the skin, so it is quite suitable for the office.
