Mumbai Market Chai Tea
The market of Mumbai is a dense throng, a sea of intense colors, bright saris, strings of spices, woven baskets carried on heads, a paisley pattern of swirling colors, scents swirling like clouds of dust, people drifting within it.
Spicy Chai! Spicy Chai! Wanna trry? he calls out raspingly from a misty corner. Veerry good! he hisses through his teeth, checkered shirt and linen pants, sandals and earthy feet. Silvery shines the cool sharpness like the breath of a hypnotized snake with fresh aromas of pepper lemon above the small wooden bowl. Below is a sandstorm of cinnamon bark, aromatic herbal spice, anise, nutmeg, and cardamom, and ethereal cloves in balsamic brown. Slowly, the yellow saffron also lays over the clay floor of the halls, and shimmering like in a fairy tale, the harsh jasmine disappears from the neighboring stall.
Really good indeed! Only verry little sweet! That was perhaps a bit understated. Black tea leaves in bitter threads drift with small osmanthus blossoms in dark spicy honey resins and warm sandal cream. Now magic Tahiti vanilla bean! he sparkles with his amber eyes, sticks a pod into the wooden bowl, and stirs the black vanilla in it. I smile and sit down with him.

Fehmida Ibrahim Shah from Ink + Ocean Botanicals produces her fragrances by hand in small batches. Her perfumes are vegan, halal, alcohol-free, and 100% plant-based. Her life path led her from studying Near Eastern archaeology to aromatherapy and the teachings of Greek-Arabic medicine. The creation of her fragrances is derived from the practices of the ancient Egyptians.
Her "Vintage Chai" strikes me as rather classic Indian, opening with cool-sharp, slightly citrusy, and ethereally spicy aromas (cardamom, nutmeg, pepper, clove, anise) in perfect balance with warming notes of cinnamon bark, the spicy-earthy saffron, and almond-like osmanthus. Slightly harsh jasmine lends some edge with bitter black tea notes in the heart, before increasingly honey-sweet resins (labdanum, benzoin), amber, and creamy sandalwood take over in the base, refined with a wonderfully dark vanilla.
The stay at the chai vendor in the market of Mumbai lasts a good seven hours and is moderate to intimate.
