the Garden of Eros
Francesca di Massimo, who is in charge of the Palazzo Vecchio/I Profumi di Firenze, provides us with a very special scent guide that leads to the "Garden of Eros" in Fiesole
At the gates of Florence, amidst green hills, the town of Fiesole welcomes us kindly.
Because that's what it is: a town and not just Florence's most famous villa suburb.
Forgetting the history (can you?), we pass stately villas, set in spacious parks; olive groves, in the shade of which small horses and donkeys rest while having a snack, and follow the far-visible, cypress-covered paths.
These green spears point the way and also straight to the sky, towards the sun.
Incidentally, a historian, who with knowledge, love and passion used to give well-attended lectures on the history of his homeland in the Berlin "Urania", also owned a villa in Fiesole.
There he regularly invited the participants of the study trips, after Venice and the Veneto as well as Florence and the surrounding Tuscany were explored in interesting city walks and day trips under his guidance.
The last evening of the ten-day trip was then spent in the already familiar circle on the terrace of his Fiesol villa; with entertaining conversation and the appropriate wine.
These often turned out to be very long evenings in an enchanting atmosphere, in which the balmy air had as much part as the delicious wine.
This was then the most beautiful conclusion of a journey which was to remain long in the memory.
But enough of this: are we, after all, in search of the "Garden of Eros".
The day is still young; it is not yet too warm to stroll around relaxed and a small picnic basket has packed us the hotel.
There, too, we were told that we could not miss this scented gem: it would "always go by the nose".
The nose already has a lot to do in Fiesole, but then we stand in front of it and step through the old wrought-iron gate: so here the god of love collects his winds, provides them with the appropriate scents and sends them to the lovers!
Shady citrus groves greet us: it could well be the "Garden of the Hesperides" mentioned again and again among the gods.
In any case, the air, still cool here, is filled with their aromatic freshness: the various fruits, ripe, fragrant, and golden, hanging from the branches, generously spray their familiar leafy, flowery, and fruity aromas.
Here they all are: bitter orange (surely there are orange trees to be found somewhere), bergamot, lemon and tangerine.
In passing, we pick one or two beautiful fruits to add to our snack later.
Stepping out of the shade of the trees, the green, undulating landscape stretches out before us, and a flower garden that has fashioned itself: everything has been given the place it likes and where it is most pleasant to live.
This we enter, accompanied by a delicate, yet well felt, whiff of neroli.
Lavender and rose geranium perennials have spread and fill the air with their spicy sun-warmed scents. Nutmeg and a bit of cinnamon wing by like butterflies, a pinch of pepper leads us further into this enchanted world.
Roses and the beautiful feathery garden carnations greet friendly and fragrant, before the jasmine bursting with white flower umbels makes itself known.
He brings the small, but never to be overlooked lily of the valley right along:
White bloomers have to stick together, after all!
Juicy fruit freshness and aromatic spiced garden flowers are already intertwined into a delightful summery chypre bouquet.
Now also in this bouquet of fragrances the resinous, green and earthy base may not be missing.
And of course we find them all: oakmoss and vetiver - the fruity brown-green earth that brings forth and nourishes all life. Benzoin and myrrh add unpolished, but for that all the more intensely fragrant resin particles, before patchouli in golden-brown flowing, creamy beauty spreads its very special scent glow over everything.
Now it is done!
The god of love Eros can release the breezes of a tender approach to each other, the gentle winds of an entertaining flirtation or even the strong storms of passion:
Just the way he likes it!
We find a place for our picnic in this landscape so widening the heart; the glimpses following its ups and downs, and we still try at first to count the cypresses that border the continuing avenues; they resemble green ribbons.
With "Vento di Eros", the "Spezerie Palazzo Vecchio/I Profumi di Firenze" has succeeded in creating an enchanting fragrance painting. In rich fragrance tones and color, occupied with numerous larger and smaller facets, this fragrance god presents itself as a summery Chypre companion with not so little fragrance fullness
