Relayer/Sound Chaser
Hiram's recent Arcadia is of a fougere nature: the fern, odorless, yet evocative of one of the most iconic scents, is exquisitely expressed in this work. The opening is bracing, like the rush of the chilled wind atop Mt. St. Helen in the rainy Fall - when the snow is not thick, but begins to lightly envelop the branches of the Pacific Silver Firs. The rose and jasmine combine with bergamot and an astringent lavender to recreate in essence a more "realistic" interpretation of the infamous English Fern (Penhaligon's). Whereas English Fern wears dense, artificial, and currently waxy in way, Arcadia is sheer, effervescent, and - expectedly - natural. Keep in mind though that the opening is quite bracing, perhaps jarring upon initial blast with this “wintergreen” slap.

The base expresses itself with a smooth transition to the cooling tonka that imparts an unsweetened vanilla touch imparted with a nutty, smooth cashmere-like scent. Comforting and hypnotic in it it's pull.

Men and women alike will enjoy, but certainly engage if you enjoy Molinard's Lavande, Rania J's Lavande 44, Penhaligon's Sartorial and English Fern, Houbigant's Duc de Vervins, and even Brut by Faberge!

Hiram's Arcadia is the clearest, most evocative of the imaginary fern smell that we all know and love. Test first.

Foresty Fougère
We start deep in the forest with that riot of green, and a little sour: I smell bergamot and lavender, yes, but an unlisted galbanum, fennel, and something a lot like yerba mate. Les Heures de Cartier: L'Heure Fougueuse did something rather similar, but this is more complex and more green.

As it unfurls, the lavender becomes more soapy and dry, with a hint of something animalic in the background (perhaps civet), as tonka, patchouli, sandalwood and rosewood move forward in the composition. Still, there is a slight “frosty” and green quality this fragrance never fully loses.

Few fougeres smell as overtly botanical as Arcadia. Green, bitter, tart, herbal, and anisic, and powdery, a little animalic, it's complex and interesting without losing its lavender core.

A warning, though: even as someone who gets massive longevity from most fragrances, this is a brief affair, with gentle sillage.

Green and floral but a little dirty
This is a fragrance that has the DNA of the house when it comes to making floral perfumes.
It is a very soft and natural scent, with a green character, green like Hiram Green. But with some beautiful flowers, this time a little "dirty".
I like that point of dirt that I imagine comes from spices, it is a different touch in the line of the house.
It is an easy-to-wear perfume, which most people will probably like, extremely versatile in its use, but I would prefer spring-summer and daytime mainly.

The performance part, well, what is expected in this type of perfumes and in this house, very moderate in duration and little silage and projection.

Lovely green snapshot of the woods
Upon my initial spray, I thought I made a mistake and would have to scrub it off. The opening is a very strong and spicy lavender that I mistook for pine. Once the more volatile compounds dissipate, sandalwood and jasmine glow through the spicy resins. It's lovely. It kind of reminds me of a hike through a pine forest when you get a whiff of fresh air and junipers or a patch of wildflowers that are just up wind from you, but amped up and concentrated. I feel like having this on makes me notice other smells around me differently, like my pencil smells almost salty to me. It smells so natural. It kind of enhances the world around me. Of course that's just what I think, my spouse said it reminded him of moth balls :')

Irish Spring Soap gets a make-over
Someone sprinkled some tonka bean and spices on ye olde Irish Spring soap bars, the classic green ones that you could buy at any drugstore or supermarket in the US. It smells nothing like a real forest or any spring I've ever come across, but it has that uber clean smell of soap. This is what Arcadia reminds me of: a cheap, unsuccessful reinterpretation of that American classic. Not a fan of Hiram Green, I guess.

After a pungent and soapy citric spicy-green opening, this warm and resinous oriental-spicy Chypre, settles to a gentle spicy-woody base.

Surprisingly enough people don’t see the resemblance to Ennui Noir: same dusty/patchouly-ish, slightly sweet lavender. Beautifully done

Beautiful first impression: soapy lavender layered over jasmine. Warm, complex drydown that evokes cleanliness. Sadly, longevity is subpar.

Lavender so strong it stings my nose even a long time after spraying. Pleasantly rosy and resinous with jasmine once it dries completely.
