Grassy caramels
Carnival D’Havana opens on a rich, buttery note that reminds me of fleur de sel caramels that you can buy in Brittany, so fat with salted butter that they ooze grease out the sides when you squeeze them. This accord is spiked with a grassy, leathery tuberose, a black coffee note, and a hint of tropical fruit.
A thick layer of musk gives everything a soft focus ‘mohair sweater’-like texture. At this stage, it reminds me somewhat of the similarly fuzzy Tubéreuse 3 (Animale) by Histoires de Parfums, which builds its musky white floral out of the dried-grass and burned-sugar aspects of immortelle, plum, tobacco, and kumquat. Both fragrances have a thick, smoky richness that elevates the floral note to something far more substantial than it would be on its own.
Carnival D’Havana takes its own sweet time to wind down to its woody tobacco core, at which point it becomes slightly drier and smokier. However, the basic character of this fragrance remains frankly gourmand. If you are a fan of the more complicated (woody, resinous, musky) gourmands out there – Aomassaï, let’s say, rather than Angel – then Carnival D’Havana is a safe bet.
