Not a perfume?

When the perfumer claims "this is not a perfume but an artisanal and artistic olfactory creation", it is obvious a few IFRA rules have been broken for the sake of an optimal olfactory experience. Being blessed with a thick elephant skin free of sensitivities towards raw materials, I am instantly drawn to perfumes that come with such disclaimers. In Angeliki I found another confirmation that this is where the good stuff at.

Angeliki has a great old-fashioned structure with an evolution through fresh, floral and balsamic stages and comes with a set of musks that truly purr. But this is not just another rebuild of the classics. Thanks to an interesting choice of florals, the heart notes show a multitude of facets and layers giving the perfume a unique character. The apricot note that is already there in the opening where it feels juicy-fruity, keeps on shining even deep into the balsamic drydown.

In social settings this has a somewhat understated appearance, while from up close the intense character is evident. In other words, wears like an absolute charm.

Out of Love...

Perfume compositions like this made me realize that chasing down vintage perfumes is futile. When I started collecting perfumes I went through a short "vintage chasing phase". Then stumbled upon Sultan Pasha and a few others from the independent realm and abandoned that ship. Angeliki is another example of such. Vintage aesthetic and glory with higher quality ingredients and on-par blending. On top of that, unique, adding new elements to replace the old and repetitive ones.

Angelos dedicated this perfume to his grandmother, and when you smell it, you can tell he put his soul into this. Coincidently, it reminds me of my grandmother. Old charm, big personality, refinement, while also tender, and delicate. The opening uses a unique pairing of aldehydes, apricots, and pomelo. I pick up the first two more vividly. The heart is where this perfume sets apart from the rest and shines. A floral bouquet made up of the most uncommon floral accords. Wisteria, Fressia, and Lilacs. Not Roses, Jasmine, or Carnation, the usual suspects. He nailed these accords, as they are not easy to pull off. The base reminds me of the structure I find in perfumes like Morah, or Diaghilev, two that are dear to me. It is rich, deep, and multifaceted. Resins, Oakmoss, Leather, and a generous amount of Civet. Huge projection and excellent longevity for those who constantly complain: "They don't make them like that anymore". I struggle with big perfumes, but this one doesn't bother me, as it contains natural ingredients for the most part.

If you love old-school perfumes, this one is a no-brainer. Those who love floral perfumes and Orientals will also find much to enjoy here. I believe it is the best from the house, as it should, given the personal significance it has for its creator.

As a lover of retro perfumes, I could only choose to have this fabulous limited edition fragrance in my collection. I've loved her from the start. first of all because Angelos created this fragrance in memory of his grandmother. So it has a meaning that goes way beyond the fragrance itself. It was created in just 104 bottles when the grandmother was years old. I consider myself lucky to have one of these 104 in my hands. It is a cypre perfume, with a vintage style. The quality of the raw materials used is immediately perceived. It has a floral heart and a creamy amber base with something animalic but not disturbing at all. I consider it more feminine than masculine , but that doesn't mean that it doesn't look good on a man. Angelos is an exquisite person and is always available. I advise everyone to have at least one of her masterpieces in their collection.

THE Chypre

Often times, the term "classic" describes a work of art for its connections to past canons that defined a genre. Much more rarely, a past-inspired new work of art can become itself the epitome we have to refer to for comparisons, the new gold standard, so to speak. The chypre genre is defined by historical standards: among all, the genre-naming perfume by Coty and the legendary Mitsouko, inspired by the former. Many followed, and defined the canons for chypres, resulting in modern interpretations such as Amouage Gold, Diaghilev, Chypre Palatin. I therefore realize that saying that something as new and modern as Angeliki is "THE chypre" might sound pretentious...

But this is what Angeliki is for me. Angelos collects the inheritance of the great classics and releases what smells like the distillation of all the best chypres, adding with his mastery a slightly modern touch, so that us modern perfume enthusiasts would love the novelty in it too. Other reviews say it: a vintage-inspired gem with a modern touch. I tried different chypres, and Angeliki was the one that appealed to me the most. And it took me months: the first time, I found the floral bouquet in the heart a bit overwhelming; but I kept trying, and by the time I got halfway through my 5ml decant I was hooked.

I won't comment too much on the top notes, which are always hard for me to dissect (especially when people claim to smell peach, for some reason). I will just say: the animalic facet - present from the beginning - is "perfectly balanced" (as a reviewer below already said), giving Angeliki that edge that will always pull you back to smell it over and over again. The heart as I said is temporarily dominated by flowers, and this might be where the difference from other chypres is more prominent. Again, not sure if I pick up any individual notes (maybe wisteria and lilac more than others?), but this speaks to the quality of the blending: everything in this perfume works together to form a perfect composition. What I love, love, love is the drydown: the ambers, the beeswax and the other animalics, and then the chypre star: oakmoss. Wow. This slightly sweet base that structures the entire architecture of Angeliki is the pinnacle of the chypre essence and it's done beautifully.

To me, this is THE chypre. The one that made me fall in love deeply with the entire genre. This dense masterpiece might not be the best for everyone's taste in the chypre realm:
Do you like more oriental things? I recommend you get Chypre Palatin.
Are you fond of smoky notes? Maybe Diaghilev is your chypre.
Are you a fan of slightly soapy scents? Then Amouage Gold is the way to go.

But are you looking for a perfect composition, made by a perfumer who could learn a bit from all the greatest masters and combine them with his personal signature in a dense and stunning piece of art? Then look no further. Angeliki is your chypre, Angeliki is THE chypre.

lots of quality

beautifully crafted chypre. you can appreciate in this a decidedly vintage mold. on the skin it softens, it is slightly more fruity over time with a slight dustiness. floral enough, without excesses, evolving into woody and slightly amber and oud base. if you are looking for this olfactory category you have come across the right brand. excellent quality and exceptional price. Angelos certainly knows how to build perfumes of exceptional manufacture. very raccomended
