Reverse Evolution
Was disappointed with this when I first got it, as according to cardboard strip test, it seemed a bit sort-of - negligible, especially given the price-brackett. Earlier, I decided to give it a run out, havng °salvaged° other seeming disappointments by the simple expedient of actually wearing them, as opposed to cardboard-strip-testing them.

I put it on - thought "where is it?".

Ten minutes later "oh! it's there!".

Twenty mnutes after putting-on "IT'S THERE!!".

Half an hour after putting-on - it just won't give me any let-up!!!

Seems to evolve in the opposite direction to what a more modest 'fume does. Not only sheer strength, but its nature & inner structure also. It's becoming a bit like when someone you thought was really bland & dull reveals to you that they've been to 27 countries, nearly died of cocaine addiction, been in prison for armed robbery, etc etc.

I'll get back to you when I've completed its run-out.

I've completed it's run-out now.
I would like to digress a little into general principle.

[Most of the rest of this is now in the thread ~Miscellaneous / Ultra-Expensive Perfumes~]

Last night I ^did^ get ^a^ compliment. It's not surprising really, coz I was veritably honking of the stuff. It's seriously powerful stuff, if you can just ^let^ it be! And one might bear in mind that the spray mechanism tends to be ^particularly^ well-made on Roja Dove perfume bottles, and doesn't dispense a large amount per spritz.

I'm wondering what to put on now, coz I'm going to the Sunday afternoon concert at the Whitworth Art Gallery; and, you know, I think I'd better use it again, as I'm still honking of it. What a remarkable transformation! I've gone from being cross at it for seeming to be rather a damp squib to being cross at it for not letting me try a different 'fume the folliwing day by virtue of its being too puissant!

The Evening Scent of a Great Diva
The joy is immense. A dear perfumer has included a sample of Roja Perfums Lily with the fragrances I ordered from her. It is the first time I am testing a scent from Roja. When will I ever get to Harrods? That’s where The Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie resides. Of course, on the sixth floor. So close to heaven … This is what the British perfumer Roja Dove promises for his fragrances. They are supposed to make you feel the heavens - be silk and satin, crystal and black lacquer (?!) And they are supposed to smell like an exotic boudoir. Gulp, I think. Then they are probably not made for me.

But I cling to the name: Lily … My favorite flower. It is not only beautiful but has one of the best scents I know.

So I spray. Soon this wonderfully cool lily scent will envelop me. The anticipation rises. But what is this? No lily in sight. I only catch a very exotic-sweet scent that I immediately identify as “bewitching” - and thus a no-go for me. Indeed. It’s as if frangipani, ylang-ylang, geranium, tuberose, and tiare all attacked me at once. Jasmine en masse not to forget! Good thing I’m staying home today, I think, in light of this passionate tropical flower orgy that does not suit me at all.

Strangely enough, such bewitching scents have been crossing my path repeatedly lately. Starting with Mukhallat by Montale, which is supposed to smell like strawberries. Now this game repeats itself with the nonexistent lily. How can you name a perfume Lily that doesn’t smell a bit like lily - and has no lily in the fragrance pyramid? But maybe Roja Dove dedicated the scent to a lady of that name and not to the sacred flower? In any case, all lily fans should be warned: It says Lily on the label, but it’s not inside.

I double-check to make sure I really got the “right scent.” Yes, I did. Still no lily. What a shame!

Alongside the ubiquitous frangipani, there are various opulent notes such as ylang-ylang, clove, musk, and vanilla, as well as the spice notes that I generally do not appreciate. In a word: Blech. Not for me.

I’m glad I didn’t buy this scent. Because it is expensive. For 50 ml, you already have to shell out € 450,-. Or you can buy 100 ml for € 900,-. Of course, there’s no bulk discount with this luxury brand. Noblesse oblige.

But one must look at it positively: Luckily, I don’t have to grapple with whether I can afford this scent or not.

At the beginning, lemon and bergamot were supposed to make their refreshing appearance. But they don’t show up for me either. It starts right away with sensual, exotic, floral, and sickly sweet. Lush hypnotic white flowers, too penetrating and intense for me. I try to find something in this scent that justifies its high price. Does it seem particularly elegant, particularly precious, noble, extraordinary, innovative, perfect? None of that. It doesn’t give me an aha moment. I realize: I am not the right person to judge Lily because I simply do not like this overtly exotic overload - not even as a room scent or fabric softener. Shake!

Surely there are ladies who like Lily. Even without the lily. Unfortunately, I also don’t perceive any of the beloved lily of the valley. But they would get lost in the tropical frenzy anyway.

I feel sorry for everyone who likes this scent, but for me, it has something cheap about it, no matter how expensive it is. It’s that typical, intrusive, hypnotic, supposed-to-be-sensual tropical flower scent that I can’t really imagine on an elegant lady with class. But, as is often the case, it’s a matter of taste. Maybe some ladies feel like queens with it. Who knows? Not me …

Aside from whether one swoons over bewitching tropical flowers or not - the scent has something smooth, superficial, lifeless about it and doesn’t change much. It is not an intellectual challenge. Not even a thought-provoking idea or inspiration.

The longevity is strong. It takes a long time for the drydown to come within nose range. Will Lily develop that sweetness I wished for from the beginning as it fades? Unfortunately no. Even in this final phase, Lily remains opulent to the point of excess. I would say the scent is made for women who like to stand out and be the center of attention. The evening scent of a diva for grand appearances: galas, festive balls, Oscar ceremonies, festivals, opera visits … Opera visits?! Oops! I hope I don’t have to spend my next opera visit (I like Wagner…) next to a lady who is wearing Lily.

Unfortunately, it's just not for me, too sweet and overwhelming. No lily, in the end dull, what a pity. Or not? It's way too expensive for me anyway ;-)

She calls herself Lily
But in truth, she's Frangipani
A posh girl
Chewing gum
And has flowers in her hair.
