All about the top notes.

I remember reading an article (or maybe a blog post?) about the state of mainstream perfumery in the last few years. One of the criticisms was the fact that so many recent scents have great and interesting top notes (to hook people smelling them in store into impulse purchasing) but then they fall flat after they've settled down. Velvet Fire is the first scent I've experienced that really typified that description.

The initial impression is delightful - it's a sparkly aromatic experience with sage and lavender, and the first hints of the spices are nice too. After about 30 minutes, the whole thing fell flat, and became an utterly generic woody musk scent that reminded me of so many other woody musk scents, kind of soapy and dull.

Such a disappointment. Considering how much a full size bottle costs, I'm pretty happy I only had a sample.
