Classy gentleman's fragrance
I've never tried X, so can't compare Monarch to it. Monarch opens with a mild citrus-y and peppery scent which is quickly overtaken by the cypress and cloves. Eventually there's the appearance of a mild woody note, but the cypress and cloves are dominant. As the hours go by, the cypress diminishes but the cloves remain more present. Monarch immediately reminded me of Alexandria Fragrances Italian Forest (which is a dupe of Tom Ford's Italian Cypress, which I've never tried) while adding the cloves and reducing the strength of the citrus.

Longevity is quite good - got about 9 hours out of it - while the projection was more moderate. Monarch is a subdued fragrance. You aren't going to fumigate a room. It's more of a classy gentleman's fragrance. While I liked it overall, it's a bit too reserved for me OR I'm not classy enough. lol

Monarch Vertus
A very interesting and appealing perfume, inspired by the perfume that founded and defined its place at the very top of perfume creations, the magnificent Clive Christian X For Men. Considering that copying perfume creations equals cloning, Monarch comes as a clone of X, and a very expensive clone at that. They have a very similar opening and continuation of the perfume composition, while X's dry down is still unsurpassed and unattainable for any perfume inspired by it. Monarch is a very smooth and refined perfume that is ideal for everyday wear, which is exactly what is expected from a daily alternative to CC X. Monarch is a fresh woody-spicy perfume. It opens with peppery juniper with a strong hit of lemon. You immediately feel that pleasant freshness, the scent of the giants that improves the mood. Carnations, cypress and a little jasmine are mixed into the continuation, while the base consists of resinous wood notes with a touch of moss and musk. For me personally, Monarch is the perfect perfume for everyday wear, I get compliments on it and I enjoy it. The projection is very good for this type of perfume, it is not radial, but you will certainly be noticed. It stays on my skin for a long 12 hours, which is more than enough for spring/summer when I wear it the most and if it suits all seasons. Vertus is a very interesting brand, in my opinion the bottles are perfectly made with a strong magnetic cap and an excellent sprayer, but I don't think that justifies their high price. Fans of CC X should definitely try this perfume.

The false king
Usually, a crown rests on the head of the monarch.
Not in this case, however, because the golden crown literally sits on the head of the clear role model: "Original Collection - X: The Masculine Perfume of the Perfect Pair / X for Men | Clive Christian"

An impressive 16 years have passed between the release of Clive Christian and this reinterpretation of his DNA from Vertus. Enough time to think things over, to dare to experiment and discard, to rethink and create something great?

After all, there are those who claim that the fresher brother of the "Original Collection - X: The Masculine Perfume of the Perfect Pair / X for Men | Clive Christian" , the 1872 for Men was once the model for a true giant: Nine years after its release, another house dared to take on this green fresh DNA with the fruity pineapple and gave it a modern, almost youthful, but definitely pleasing coat of paint. The result is still considered by many to be the ultimate in the perfume world, as we are talking about none other than Aventus

So has Vertus now done the same to Creed and produced a mass-market hit from Clive Christian's typically classic, almost somewhat aged DNA? The answer is sobering: No. Nothing was ventured and yet lost.

At heart, the monarch's DNA remains astonishingly close to the role model, so close that you don't have to suspect a relationship, it jumps out at you. Malicious tongues would almost claim that he is nothing more than a cheap copy. And: you would almost wish it were, but it's not cheap. Not even cheaper, because the "Original Collection - X: The Masculine Perfume of the Perfect Pair / X for Men | Clive Christian" reaches the same price in the sale.

So what are the differences? This becomes clearest in the opening, when a peppery lemon underlay loudly demands its place next to the actual fragrance composition, but never manages to merge harmoniously with the DNA. As quickly as it arrives, however, the citrus note is gone again and is replaced by cool juniper, which makes the DNA a little lighter for the rest of the fragrance. The rest of the fragrance can also be described as lighter, but no different: It lacks the volume, density and power of the original.

For me, this monarch remains a failed usurper, a false king, a lost hope.

Indefinable
Background: Perfumos send me samples, I then test the perfumes sent without any knowledge and describe my response - that of an inexperienced dilettante.

Wonderful. It's Saturday, the kids are in bed after 627,123 words, the heating has failed and I finally have time for a new fragrance. Thick blanket, off to the couch and off we go.
Hola, a herbaceous-fresh opening with a citrusy-bitter note. The nostrils are fully arched in order to better absorb the scent, even if this makes no sense whatsoever. Ha! Basil, definitely! But the normal one, not the Thai one, because there is definitely no licorice snail crawling in through the nostril. And there's moss too, because only on my stubborn skin does moss become an encounter of the third kind, which could best be described by the term intergalatic ashtray. Fortunately, I have deactivated the "I like/don't like" categories today, and a fragrance simply remains a fragrance. But what is it supposed to tell me? Inwardly, the eyeballs bulge towards the firmament as if there were yoga classes for the organs of sight. They are looking for a message and find the sophisticated calm of darkness. Well, after all.
Over time, it becomes a little sweet and my guess is clary sage. That makes it milder, but there could also be a little jasmine in the mix. To be honest, I have absolutely no idea what is currently entering my limbic system.
Based on my gut feeling, I would say it's a Clive Christian vintage fragrance clone in synthetic. Funnily enough, on close inspection it is clear but bitter, sweet and spicy in the air, but only moderately perceptible. It seems a little cold, distant and somehow grumpy. You literally wait until he finally stops complaining and fills out his tax return with his wooden pencil.
So I'd better make myself a cognac first.

Fata Morgana or the emperor's new clothes?
Difficult, difficult. It already starts with the packaging: If you expect a noble wooden casket with silky inlay (as pictured above), you will be disappointed. The fragrance currently traded in this country comes in a neat cardboard slipcase. This is not particularly luxurious.
The fragrance also reminds me strongly of X by Clive Christian. "Inspired by..." is the positive interpretation of this fact. One could also say, it is a fairly high-priced clone.
In this respect, one could now also read at the template, if it should be about the description of the fragrance.
In any case, it is easy to see that Geza Schön has done the groundwork. Monarch has this floating transparent beauty and this Fata Morgana-like volatility, which distinguishes many of his works.
I find Monarch to be woody and fresh in a very distinguished and sublime way. That's the positive aspect. The sillage is on skin, textile and paper is, however, modest to unsatisfactory. I do not perceive any development in the course of the fragrance. Thus I have the impression of a molecular fragrance, even if the pyramid claims something else.
And apparently you can such composed fragrances also hardly "turn louder". Presumably, they otherwise lose their magic.
Monarch fascinates me despite these weaknesses nevertheless very much - probably just because he gives himself so unapproachable.
