Bois de Babylone not only sounds good but also mysterious and high-quality. And at a price of just over €210 per 100 ml, I can expect not only this distinct minimalist bottle but also a more than pleasant fragrance.
What I perceive after spraying it is a concentrated blend of woody and especially fruity components between red berries and throat lozenges. Together with the incense, the opening comes across like the strongly aromatic smoke from a shisha bar.
This may be totally fascinating for some, but since there is no further development over the hours, the theme can become challenging over time - especially since Bois de Babylone does not skimp on projection and longevity. Other notes like suede, cashmere, and cedarwood only come through marginally because the smoky berry note dominates. I usually know scents with violet leaf differently and am more or less reassured that another perfumer has sniffed out the berries as well.
So, those who enjoy the fruity-smoky shisha vibe without it being overly sweet could indeed find happiness with Bois de Babylone. After all, it’s not a stinker, but personally, I find the EdP too monotonous and too overpowering, even though the concept was certainly well thought out.
