A Chariot Across The Skies

Helios, in Greek religion, represents the god of the sun, sometimes called Titan. He drove a chariot every day from east to west across the sky and sailed around the northern stream of the ocean every night in an enormous cup. He was the son of Hyperion and Theia, brother of Selene and Eos, father of Phaeton. Its Roman counterpart is Sol. Helios, why Helios? What do the recent Zippo’s fragrance and the Greek god of the sun have in common? The distinct bottle in the shape of a lighter encloses strength and virility typical of the Sun God. The play of transparencies created by the fret on the back enhanced the radiant blonde head of Helios that decorates the front of the bottle.

Let’s see what the fragrance is like and try to solve the mystery. Fragrance designer built Zippo Helios according to the principle that allows opposite notes to fight and, at the same time, live together in peace and harmony. In fact, in the multifaceted bouquet, we find the fresh notes of apple and watermelon enriched with citrus nuances that intertwine with the sensuality of musky accords decorated with fig leaves. Let’s say a fruity and fougère cologne.

I have about four other Zippo colognes, and this is a blessing for me. It is not overly complicated; instead, it is a dynamic and modern fougère fragrance with woody and musky facets. At first, the essence rises with that fig leaf, so strong in the opening that it invades my nose. It sticks to me until the end, and from time to time, it joins the other goodness in this composition. It is a dry, withered fig, far from the mineral and milky notes. A bright, tart lemon zest dances with a soft orange as the crunchiness of the green apple exudes prematurely.

A herbaceous and dark lavender announces the incoming heart. The apple now arrives at the fore and dominates the scene, along with a moistening watermelon, fresh, juicy. The middle phase is fougère, aromatic, relaxing. I like the Zippo Helios mostly for the relaxing lavender note. This flowery and fragrant note does not place in the heart but continues at the bottom, joining the moss.

When you are finally at the bottom of the pyramid, Helios settles on the skin with musky and mossy notes. Elegant and enveloping woody accords find their place in the base. Cedar adds a dry tone to the previous phases, all too sweet and fruity. However, soft musk and almost woody, earthy oakmoss are the keynotes, leading Helios to a more mossy side.

There is nothing edgy about this fragrance. Instead, it’s smooth all the way through. More of a mild-to-moderate projector, but musk amplifies this fragrance a bit, as musk usually does. The performance is quite good. I have about half a day with this stuff; it perishes in the evening, and I can safely apply a night fragrance without creating dangerous mixtures. For a fragrance for men, Helios turns out to be a rich, sensual and chic jus. I see it well on warm spring days, but also in autumn. It is a daytime perfume, excellent for both the office and leisure time.

I based the review on a 75ml bottle I have owned since December 2020.
