Antonio de Montesinos and the Black Legend
He was a Dominican friar, and his spirit shaped by justice brought about lasting change within the Spanish Catholic Church. Especially with his accusatory sermon on the 4th Advent of the year 1511 in today's Cathedral of Santo Domingo, against the exploitation, enslavement, and un-Christian treatment of the Indios, he caused a stir and unease in faraway Spain. His sermon, which has been passed down to us through Bartolomeo de las Casas in his "Historia de las Indias," also led to further critical voices from within the ranks of the Dominicans.

The atrocities committed by the Spaniards in the "New World," as well as the misdeeds in their own country during the Reconquista and the expulsion of Jews and Moors from Spain, were recorded in the so-called "Leyenda negra," the Black Legend. However, the rulers in Spain have always denied this and, in turn, praised the Spanish conquests in the New World in the so-called "Leyenda rosa," the Pink Legend.

Even though Antonio de Montesinos' sermon did not bring about any tangible changes or results, it is still an important part of Spanish history and has thus made Antonio de Montesinos immortal.

Has Dana succeeded in capturing the "spirit of Montesinos" in this fragrance? Admittedly, I expected a resinous scent, possibly heavily emphasized with incense, and I hesitated for a long time to add it to my Dana collection.

However, my fears were unfounded. Espiritu de Montesinos begins with a very citrusy opening; I suspect that not only citrus fruits but also yuzu, with its typical green note in my perception, was used.

This citrus note is also carried on by the following white flowers - neroli? - and is later complemented by just a touch of wood. I cannot note a real progression; once the heart note has developed, the fragrance remains as it is until it fades.

The sillage is very subtle, making the fragrance extremely close to the skin. Nevertheless, I was surprised by its longevity of over 12 hours.

Had Antonio de Montesinos known and worn this fragrance, it would have likely been for himself. For hardly would anyone have come so close to him to perceive the scent.

Yet despite the very weak sillage, I find the fragrance exceptionally pleasant and, especially in these temperatures, as shown by this year's July, very wearable. I feel fresh and rejuvenated, without smelling like "eau de cologne."
