The Apocalypse is Canceled
They told us, don’t go over the mountains, there awaits you only desolation and death. They told us, stay here in the valley, life is hard but safe. They told us, be content with what you have here, even if it is little and meager. They told us, don’t strive for more, that is the path to ruin.
All of this they said, again and again, but I couldn’t listen to them. The valley here is too narrow, the horizon too close, always reachable in just a few hours, without mystery. So I set off, over passes and through narrow valleys, a laborious path, yet now I stand at the foot of the mountains and feel the cool wind, sharp blowing down from the heights at my back.
And it is desolate here, but not empty. The trees are black, but resin flows beneath the charred bark and between the bare earth, timid green appears. Smoke drifts over the land, yet the air is warm and it smells aromatic. The fresh wind from the mountains fights against it, but after a few more steps it fades and the warmth surrounds me. Leaning against a charred tree trunk, I sit now and even my heavy, coarse leather becomes wonderfully soft and gentle. I gaze into the distance, toward the horizon, and for the first time it seems infinitely far away and mysterious.

To be honest, I’m not quite sure why post-apocalyptic images automatically come to mind with Atomico XXVI, but they are always there. Images like in Mad Max, The Road, or Fallout. It’s probably just the name, because the scent has nothing apocalyptic about it.
It starts off very peppery and there are also fresh notes, though it’s not quite clear if they come from vetiver or cedar. In contrast, there are warm resins and sweet vanilla (thankfully not too much and not too sweet). This is a very nice contrast that presents itself a bit differently each time I wear it. Sometimes the sweet-resinous notes prevail, sometimes the peppery-fresh ones. Soon creamy, spicy sandalwood joins in, though it’s not Mysore (no glue), but also not generic. The vanilla becomes a bit more pronounced and amber comes along. It shouldn’t get any sweeter for me, and this blend is perfectly done as it is. The leather note only comes through towards the base. It is a clean, soft leather, slightly creamy and spicy, and there’s also a hint of sweet wood, like licorice, the latter slightly burnt.
Which brings us back to the apocalypse: the smoke. It runs through the entire scent journey, initially still relatively weak, then increasingly noticeable, and in the base, it becomes a bit less again. But it’s not a dense, black smoke, rather a lighter and gentler one. In the middle of the journey, I briefly have the feeling of an extinguished match, but that doesn’t last long.
So the apocalypse is canceled for now, and it won’t come in `26 either, as I have something else planned. Atomico is a very warm, cozy autumn and winter scent with enough depth to not be boring, but also not so much as to be exhausting. Thus, it’s well wearable for the whole day (it lasts a good 10-12 hours), and if you get it on your scarf, it lasts a few days.
