A vision of soul light and earth animals
There was light, bright light, a lot of light that could even be felt through my closed eyelids. And these very bright voices, Hildegard music. Very fine, high-pitched singing. With my bare feet, I could feel the open earth I was standing on and also breathe in its rough, strong, earthy and sometimes slightly solvent-like scent. Whenever I managed to open my eyes, I could see the bright struts reaching far upwards, almost like in a very bright Gothic cathedral, but open at the top so that I could see as far as the sky. These struts were alive, plant-like, growing ever further and in new numbers from the earth. Green bergamots and mugwort flowers exuding their tart aroma grew on them. The next time I managed to open my eyes and not look away, the crinkly, wafer-thin, delicate pink and white petals of rock roses unfurled from the struts, new ones appearing again and again. Drops of resin dripped from them like tart, animal honey, falling onto tart tobacco leaves and from there into the earth, and the bright threads of incense began to unfurl. The rays of bright light crossed the threads of incense and made the dust particles glow as they danced in the air. And now they came, the air whales, majestic and yet with infinitely calm lightness they floated through the struts between the threads of incense and the paper-like cistus blossoms...
-----
"Cistus" by D:Sol MMXVI has an earthy, grounding side, mugwort-tart, rough, with subtle animalic notes of cistus and ambergris. However, the animalism remains very cultivated (and never becomes as strong as in my beloved labdanum with its goat notes, if of good quality). At the same time, I find the fragrance to be very bright throughout, with an ethereal, solvent-like opening, and then a delicate floral in a combination of subtle rose and, above all, the eponymous rockrose. The incense that follows is also bright. The ambergris in the base adds a subtle animal depth without darkening the fragrance.
Dennis Werner's Berlin-based house D:SOL has a declared program to develop fragrances "between Mallorca and Berlin" that combine the Mediterranean sun and herbs with the urban vibrancy of Berlin, all of which address tensions between the two poles in different ways. So far, Marie Urban Le Febvre and Delphine Thierry have worked for D:SOL as perfumers.
In the house dossier for "Cistus", Delphine Thierry is shown with her cistus roses in her garden in Grasse. She says: "Cistus is an extraordinary essence that embodies a fascinating duality [...]. This earthy richness evokes a raw, almost primal connection to nature. Yet cistus also has a sacred side that evokes the quiet serenity of old churches - polished pews, aged paper, incense and the dust of forgotten stories. It is this sacred warmth that [...] elevates the scent of cistus, making it a deeply grounding and transcendent fragrance. Cistus roots you to the earth and lifts your soul to the heavens."
"Cistus" is characterized by a great quality of ingredients - and the theme is really well realized: rooted in the earth and its animalic depths, and the soul flies to the sky.
Thanks to Knopfnase for sharing - the fragrance has now made it onto my wish list.
