Interesting Facts

The soap and perfume factory "Hylin & Cos. Fabriks Aktiebolag'' from Stockholm in Sweden was essentially built up from 1857 by the German Heinrich August Ferdinand Grumme. The former manager of the soap and perfume factory J. S. Douglas Söhne in Hamburg and later "Soap King" Grumme was born in Harste near Göttingen in the former Kingdom of Hanover in 1829 and died in Stockholm in 1900.

Hylin & Cos. is said to have operated several perfumeries and sold fine toiletries as well as household and medical products. The product range included Eau de Cologne, perfume, soaps, essences, pomades, stain remover, tooth tinctures, hair oils, remedies for gout and rheumatism, scented pads, shaving soap and cosmetics. Grumme is said to have been co-owner and technical director of Hylin & Cos. until 1880 and to have mechanized the manual production. In 1882, he and his sons founded a candle and soap factory in the neighborhood of Hylin & Cos.

All that remains of the former royal court supplier Hylin & Cos. are cultural and historical remains: A minor archaeological investigation was carried out in 2022/2023 on the former company site at Ostgötagan 31 as part of canal work, during which the foundations of the buildings demolished in 1911 and old Hylin & Cos. brick kilns were uncovered, as well as ceramic shards, stove tiles, a porcelain soap dish, bottle glass shards and numerous glass fragments from 19th century perfume bottles.
