In or out of my comfort zone?
The name Laurent Smal had caught my eye in several reports for some time and had piqued my interest for a reason. The fact that I already know the style of this perfumer from several creations I love from other houses but with the same nose is apparently not too officially confirmed by that given occasion these days, but "if you know, you know", as the saying goes here.
As the curiosity of my nose knows no bounds, I tracked down Laurent's profile some time ago and emailed myself the latest creations, fragrance notes and price lists and was already on the verge of ordering until I suddenly became unsure, as I was actually unable to locate anyone who could verify this address for me until recently.
So I kept asking around until a very dear friend from Paris had this to say about the name: "Yes, it really is him. And yes, it doesn't matter what you order, all of it will be great." I'm always willing to take risks, so I simply ordered this fragrance blind. Based on the name, the fragrance notes and the knowledge that I really like this perfumer's style.
Shipped from London, by express delivery. The parcel was sent on Saturday afternoon and arrived in Vienna on Monday afternoon.
Lovingly packaged, wrapped in a printed cloth, it was then in a beautiful box, the beautiful bottle filled with dark pure perfume oil and wrapped in a golden bow. It was the first time I was really nervous to even open a fragrance because of all the excitement. Jasmine Nocturne, what could it possibly smell like?
The top note is a beautiful, bright song of jasmine sambac, without any indolicity but with the usual radiance that is characteristic of this floral oil. This is followed by soft, beautiful oud, which is not hidden, but is only present as an accompaniment in this composition, as it is already clear from this point where the journey is heading.
Rum is already noticeable from this point, the composition creates a sweet-boozy impression before the diva presents herself in full size. After the first ecstatic opening of blossoms and boozy notes, an orchid blossoms alongside dark vanilla and tonal notes, making one thing clear: SHE, she alone, is the queen of the night and wants all eyes and noses on her. The fragrance says: "Look at me, here I am". It is striking, engaging, strong, demanding, narcotic and captivating at the same time
At this point, although I'm very impressed by the strength and richness of the fragrance, I'm still quite far from my comfort zone, where my favorites usually lie. Do I still want to know more? YES.
Towards the base, a wonderful, zero resinous, earthy cool patchouli note gradually emerges, which brings our self-confident lady back down to earth a little, the fragrance becomes woodier, more leathery, less engaging, but still remains in the genre "attractive, sexy, sensual, nocturnal"
As the name suggests, this jasmine blooms for the night and envelops you with its radiant presence. A fragrance for special occasions, for lovers of heavy, dark, sweet oriental scents. A great fragrance experience far removed from my usual preferences, which, like the night,
has cast a spell over me. Bravo, Laurent !
