A mix of watery rose and gloopy tonka bean

I quite like Rania J's perfumes, especially Ambre Loup and Oud Assam. But I think Rose Ishtar is a misfire. On my skin, it is a green, sour rose (watery) swamped by a greasy layer of tonka bean paste. The rose tries to break through, but it is mostly held back by this sweet, lumpy-oily tonka, obscuring it like a thick blanket on a muggy day. There is a cheap almond smell to the tonka, a certain underlying shoddiness inherent perhaps in the tonka bean or coumarin itself, and it reminds me most unfortunately of almond-scented room sprays or candles. In fact, I don't get much rose through much of the scent's progression, except for hour 18 when the grease breaks and the rose pops out like a spurt of pus from a zit.

Very alluring

This scent snuck up on me as a new favorite. I tend to avoid rose as a note. For me, rose is reminiscent of vintage soaps. However, this rose is a very sweet, juicy rose.

Though the rose note is the clear star of the show, it's offset by the sandalwood and tonka bean, giving it a smoky, woody, mysterious element. Very youthful and alluring! I wore a spritz out of the store and it made me feel feminine and sexy.

I wasn't expecting to love it this much but I can't stop thinking about it. I'll be going back soon for a sample, if not a full size bottle.

Rose morbide

One must give it to Rose Ishtar, the scent has not made it easy for me!

I have tested the fragrance twice already, and with each time I am more fascinated by it, but somehow the last spark just won't ignite.

The slight fruity acidity in the opening disappears too quickly to be considered a proper top note. And the transition from heart to base note is also very subtle.

In my perception, Rose Ishtar is a fragrance where the namesake rose plays more of a supporting role rather than a leading one for a very long time. The rose is indeed present, but it is enveloped by what I find to be a dusty, powdery, and strangely sweet note.

The only change I can still perceive in the base is a hint of sandalwood, which slightly diminishes the dustiness, but cannot completely overpower it.

All in all, the fragrance has a slightly morbid quality for me, like an old, sepia-toned photo of a long-deceased person or an old enchanted villa.

The longevity is very good, and the projection is not too overwhelming, which would likely lead to breathlessness with such a dusty scent.

And I am still struggling!
