Hand rolled in Amsterdam

Liza Witte's fragrances come in a cardboard wrapper. Hand made in every way, which is nice. It adds a bit of indie flavour. Plus it is a Dutch house that combines design with body care products, so we are off to a great start.

Amalgam A is not the most alluring name for a perfume, but I guess it refers somehow to the typical 'golden glow' of amber. Because this is in fact a full-on amber perfume. It starts with a certain cognac-like scent that keeps me in a chokehold for a while, but that gets sorted out along the way. When it all settles down, the amber remains with some faint woody and sugary notes on the side. And lots of smoke, cold smoke.

Apart from the boozy opening the perfume wears light and it is pretty wearable for an indie brand. I guess it shows that she is a product designer and has eye for functionality as well as creativity.

Spider smoke to gold with an amber spindle

All the fine threads of smoke, still shimmering greenish between the dark walls. How am I supposed to spin their tangled weaves, which carry tiny pearls of lime and hairs of mint leaves, into gold in one night, when I was only given this amber spindle? At least it's warm. A diffuse light flickers in it, like the embers of a log in the fireplace in mottled tobacco colors. Oh, may the first rays of sunlight that fall through the windows in the morning refract their light in the pictures in it and scatter it on the threads, giving them the appearance of gold.

Liza Witte is an artist, product designer and perfume maker from Amsterdam. She makes all her products, from fragrances and body care to earthenware and art objects, by hand in small batches.
"Amalgam A" combines a whole range of notes that can be found in resins and amber with delicate smoke - it is an amber amalgam. Gold, which is listed here in the pyramid, is of course odorless, but even without this knowledge I could not place it in the fragrance with the greatest imagination. The opening is reminiscent of citrusy incense or elemi, carries slightly minty-fresh aromas and then develops increasingly warm, woody, tobacco-like notes typical of dark amber, always interwoven with fine threads of smoke. The tiny citrus and mint notes slowly dissolve, making the fragrance appear warmer and warmer, literally flickering on the skin like the light of a burning fireplace, moderately lasting a long evening.
