Luxury Lotus with a rather smoky-earthy Oud and typical Nebiru signature
Wow, the Mandalay is a really interesting, horizon-expanding Nebiru with a certain beginner-friendliness and daily wearability. First off: I had no idea that lotus could smell so beautiful and multifaceted! I can imagine that Mandalay needed a few more attempts to achieve the perfect balance between a "spotlight lotus" with depth, spice, and a changing scent progression. But: Frederic has definitely succeeded :-)
Mandalay starts with a sweet-alcoholic note, amber, musk, and strong, spicy citrus. You can already sense a certain floral quality in the first 15 minutes, without the lotus being able to dominate the scent. The lotus comes across (still) very 'tenderly', contributing more with a strong sweetness. Oud is also already detectable in the first 30 minutes, but it leans towards a earthier direction.
After 30 minutes, Mandalay presents itself as a resinous-sweet, intense floral/lotus scent with a clearly noticeable champaca component, as well as earthy, very slightly animalic oud and patchouli.
After 1 hour: The citrus and spice from the top notes I perceived on my skin relatively (very) briefly. After an hour, the scent develops into a floral-spicy character. The lotus is very, very interesting, as it literally "lulls" you in, being soft and very noble.
In the time between hour 1 and 2, a certain earthy animalic quality develops, but by no means is it a stinker. The oud-patchouli accords temporarily take up a bit of space from the flowers, but they become more noticeable again towards the end of the 2nd hour. It has a floral-resinous tendency in hour 2 - 2.5.
By hour 4, it feels balsamic-woody with this distinctive sweet note of the lotus flower.
Funny: Between the 4th and 5th hour, the sweetness even gives me slight bubblegum vibes :D
The scent is now best described as sweet, balsamic, floral, and woody.
Between hours 5-8, it evolves into an airy, resinous-balsamic floral scent with woods.
On the "home stretch" from hour 9 (until ~12/13), there is only a little (lotus) flower left -- rather a resinous, balsamic end.
##############
Conclusion:
A thoroughly floral Nebiru with very subtle (one wouldn't think so with the base notes, right?!) animalic/"dirty" qualities. The scent development is very interesting with an exciting, changing drydown. Nothing is (too) linear, it’s really fun to "listen" to it 8-)
Very likable DNA and for floral and lotus fans (of course) an absolute must-have.
I was close to buying it - but then I decided on the Ruby instead ^^
Clear purchase recommendation!
