Luxury lotus with a rather smoky, earthy oud and typical Nebiru signature
Ui, the Mandalay is a really interesting, horizon-broadening Nebiru with a certain beginner-friendliness and suitability for daily use. First of all: I didn't know that lotus could smell so beautiful and multi-layered! I can imagine that the Mandalay needed a few more attempts to achieve the perfect balance between a "limelight lotus" with depth, spice and a changing fragrance progression. But: Frederic has definitely succeeded :-)
Mandalay starts with a sweet, alcoholic note, amber, musk and strong, spicy citrus. You notice a certain florality in the first 15 minutes, but without being able to smell lotus more dominantly. The lotus is (still) very 'tender', rather contributing with a strong sweetness. Oud can also be smelled directly in the first 30 minutes, but this goes in a more earthy direction.
After 30 minutes, Mandalay presents itself as a resinous-sweet, intense floral/lotus fragrance with a clearly perceptible champaca component as well as an earthy, very little animalic oud and patchouli.
After 1 hour: I only noticed the citrus and spiciness of the top notes on my skin for a relatively (very) short time. After an hour, the fragrance takes on a floral-spicy development. Very interesting is the lotus, which literally "lulls you in", is supple and very elegant.
In the time between hours 1 and 2, a certain earthy animalism develops, but by no means a stinker. The oud-patchouli accords take a little space away from the flowers for a short time, but they become more noticeable again towards the end of the 2nd hour. It has a floral-resinous tendency in hour 2 - 2.5.
Up to hour 4, it is balsamic-woody with this distinctive sweet note of lotus flower.
Funny: between the 4th and 5th hour, the sweetness even gives me slight bubblegum vibes :D
The scent is now best described as sweet, balsamic, floral, woody.
Between hour 5-8 it develops into an airy, resinous-balsamic floral scent with woods.
On the "home stretch" from hour 9 (to ~12/13), there is only a little (lotus) flower -- more of an incensey, resinous finish.
##############
Conclusion:
A thoroughly floral nebiru with a very subtle (you wouldn't think so from the base notes, would you?!) animalic/"dirty" note. The development of the fragrance is very interesting with an exciting, changing drydown. Nothing is (too) straightforward, it's really fun to "listen" to 8-)
Very like-able DNA and an absolute must-have for flower and lotus fans (anyway).
Was about to buy it - but then decided on the Ruby ^^
Clear purchase recommendation!
