Vanilla Orchid in Need of Insulin
Midnight Orchid opens with an attractive fresh freesia note, but within 5 minutes, it crashes into a brash heady syrupy vanilla, gardenia and indolic jasmine musk blend with a bold dose of synthetic orchid accord on the top, the bottom and all sides. I bought this in a local boutique as an impulse purchase, way back before I was obsessed with fragrances. I can summarize my three experiences wearing this fragrance as follows:
First time-Cute little bottle on my dresser and I thought Wow! That is so sweet and girly. Not my style, in fact it's slightly nauseating. Washed it off and totally forgot about it. A month later in the middle of a balmy Summer day, I applied one spritz. Oy Vey! This is overwhelmingly cloying! Why did I buy this, exactly? Washed it off. Forgot about it. Third time- Thought I would follow the Perfumeur's suggestions on the website and layer it with another fragrance from the Susanne Lang line. I chose "Tamboti Wood", a lovely calming smooth unisex woody fragrance. Midnight Orchid Combined with Tamboti Wood was still disturbingly syrupy, but now a rather good masculine scent I wouldn't mind smelling on a Man. Just not on me. As is the danger with the overuse of synthetic orchid accord that is currently in fashion, this over-the-top sweet heady floral creates a rather loud 'notice me!' sign for the wearer, but not in a good way. Midnight Orchid has good sillage and last for about 8-10 hours (honestly, that is the longest I was ever able to stand it). I think this is a good fragrance for anyone who likes Brittany Spear's "Fantasy" but wants to get into something Niche without that celebrity fragrance stigma attached. Some may find this to be a very seductive and alluring fragrance, but I found it projected an annoying needy synthetic sweetness from my skin and I couldn't make it work.
