A Wild Ride Through the Night
Electri is the second fragrance I am trying from the house of Vapormundum. Once again, it was a blind buy out of curiosity.
What makes Electri special is the fact that it can be enhanced with 2 additional accords (sparkling Champagne and burnt incense). This means that I can give the existing scent an individual expression, depending on the moment, occasion, or mood. One could call this approach layering in perfection.
I am still quite new in these areas of the perfume world and cannot say whether Joschka Klee, the mind behind the fragrances, had a new idea here or if this is an "old hat." For me, however, it is absolute new territory. Please feel free to let me know in the comments what there is to say about it.
The presentation, packaging, and display are impeccable. So let's quickly move on to the scent itself.
Immediately after spraying, I sense peppery spice notes, which are then quickly overshadowed by patchouli and (for me, somewhat too prominent) labdanum. The first time, this was the moment that made me doubt whether this blind buy was a wise decision.
And while I am still pondering this (as doubts arise again), something rough and smoky breaks out from the center of these aromas and wraps itself like a dark wool coat over all the scents. Warm, dark - and a bit scratchy it is, this incense coat, but I like it a lot.
Thank goodness, I must say, because this status remains for quite some time.
It is true, I feel transported back to my youth when we turned the night into day in smoky rock clubs. And just like in those days - there is no champagne for me here either. Electri remains dark and smoky - and I enjoy it every second now.
And then, slowly I notice how the rough elements give way to a discreet sweetness. In the rock club, it seems the doors have been opened, because the smoke is dissipating more and more, and I perceive the old, worn wooden floor. I can sense gentle sandalwood notes while the incense gradually drifts out of the windows and disappears into the night sky. Whether the slight sweetness is vanilla, I cannot say for sure - but I do perceive it.
Electri is definitely a wild ride through the darkness - and it has, alongside many highs, a few (smaller) lows, but it fits so perfectly into my current scent preferences that it captivates me.
But now a simple question arises: And the two accords?
And now it gets exciting.
Sparkling Champagne brings exactly what its name suggests. There are sparkling, bright notes, slightly bitter. - Just as if ice-cold drinks were being served in the rock club. A successful experience on its own.
In combination with the base perfume, something new emerges.
The rock club now becomes more of a club, with more light shows, harder beats, cooler cocktails - but also less warmth, less soul(?). It is a balancing act to get the "right" mixing ratio - but it is an exciting game. So many variations and options are possible, so many decisions must be made: which part comes first? How do I dose each part? How simultaneously or delayed do I use the scent and the accord?
The consumer becomes an active part of the scent, of Joschka's creation. Very, very exciting.
And then there's "Burnt Incense."
This accord is less dark than I would have expected. Pure incense, certainly. Something clicks in my head, and I search for the association, finding it quickly. I once attended a mass at Notre Dame de Paris - and I find this incense again after a few minutes. Clear, distinct, perfect.
With this accord, the creative possibilities multiply - and somewhat overwhelm me at the moment. - I must definitely admit that.
What can I conclude?
Electri is definitely a challenging fragrance, and I can understand anyone who says "no thanks." But it captivates me, here and now. Electri does not come smart and elegant, trying to please everyone. Electri is more of the bad boy that you have to approach cautiously.
I think it's great and just wish the accords had been delivered a bit more generously. 8ml is a bit too limited for me. So Joschka, if you read this, Dominik here. ;)
Test Electri - it’s worth it!
