Props to Soki London
I was so excited to buy Soki’s first perfume! I love watching her perfume videos on YouTube. I think she has a fantastic way of conveying perfume notes over a screen to perfume lovers all around the world. She used to work at a perfume shop, and we have similar perfume preferences, so I was curious to see what her first perfume would smell like. When she launched her perfume, I bought sample as soon as I could. It arrived quicker than I anticipated! Incredibly affordable. Things took an unexpected turn when I opened the package, though.

First impressions: I absolutely hated it. It smelled rancid, like bug spray. I ended up throwing it in the back of my sample perfumes and would keep trying it occasionally, only to keep being disappointed by it. I was shocked and disappointed. How could so many people detect so many notes in this toxic smelling scent? It doesn’t make any sense!

Eventually I worked up the courage to try it out again today. I sprayed it a bunch of times into my trash can, hoping to clear out the sprayer and wondering if the shipping process just hadn’t been kind to the poor sample. Then came the moment of truth: I sprayed it onto the back of my hand, ready to see if anything had changed… I was pleasantly surprised! Finally! A sweet smell was coming through! Gone was the noxious scent of shipping, replaced by actual scent notes!

In the beginning it does smell very strongly of hairspray (maybe because of the alcohol content of my sample sprayer). As it settles, the strawberry peeks through slightly. It starts smelling more like a strawberry waffle cookie scented hair chemical/product. I think I’m able to get the slight cookie note due to the toffee and popcorn that Soki included in this fragrance.

The dry down is generic and sugary-berry smelling, but it’s sweet in the way unsweetened tea is sweet.

All in all, it was quite an experience to have. I will be using up the rest of my sample. Maybe one day when I have more disposable income I’ll buy a full bottle. I’m hoping a bottle size worth of perfume will bring about the notes more easily so that I can play with it more.

In conclusion, if you happened to have the same initial experience I had, try clearing out the spray head/straw(?) in order to reach the actual fragrance underneath. This wouldn’t be a daily wear for me, but I’d be happy to play with this fragrance when I want a change up in my perfume journey.

Just…no
Look, I’ve really enjoyed Soki’s channel and I really admire her for taking this huge entrepreneurial step, but I’m also entitled to my (kindly and respectfully stated) honest opinion as a consumer. And my honest opinion is, sadly, this perfume was Just Not Good. I understand what she was going for, but I personally think the execution was a little lacking.

I had to spray my 15 ml travel spray a few times to get the true sense of the fragrance. I’m not sure what happened, maybe it was just stored for a while and didn’t keep well, but the first few sprays of this just smelled, frankly, like an unblended mess. I was getting heavy sickly strawberry, toffee, and STRONG popcorn all at the same time, but they were competing for attention rather than presenting as a smooth blend.

After spraying a few times, though, the perfume seemed to “settle.” It’s still very strong, but more of a cohesive fragrance. It is coming across to me as a mix of Jimmy Choo EDP and YSL Mon Paris with the strawberry top note. I don’t get any of the floral notes, this is primarily a sweet fruitchouli to me. You really do have to like patchouli to like this fragrance, it packs a punch.

So to be fair, if those sweet fruity gourmand-ish fragrances are your thing, you’ll probably like this! That’s not my taste though, so I’m really just not vibing with this. It’s way too heavy and sweet to wear to the office, I have other “daily driver” seasonal perfumes I’d reach for over this one, and it’s not quite my taste for a “going out” or “date night” perfume.

All that being said…I will say I have also tried the other two Soki London perfumes, Aphrodite and Artemis, and both of those are MUCH better than Empress, in my opinion. Both are full-bottle worthy. So please go try those if you’re able! It’s just a shame this one was a “miss” for me.

What happened?
*Pufffffff* it made, and I found myself in a pear-soapy strawberry cloud that almost took my breath away.

I don't know how this could happen. I just pressed a seemingly harmless spray nozzle, and I drowned in this dense cloud of sweetness! Uff.... okay, first try not to faint. I gasped for air and waited for the fresh and airy heart note that was supposed to save me from the pear soap...

...I survived and was met with extremely sugared rose. Wow. This was not a fresh rose; it was heavy, sugared oriental rose water stirred into syrup.... in the background, a fresh breeze of rose scent also appeared, and I was still gasping for air.

...when I came to, I must have dreamily left the syrup rose garden without noticing. This intense fever dream of sugar, fruits, and candied roses now had a caramel, popcorn-like note that accompanied me on my way through a sun-drenched, slightly spicy summer forest back into reality.

Incredible.

Very intense, almost headache-inducingly powerful, but beautiful!

Let's see how my second Empress journey goes...

I don't see the resemblance to Miss Dior Cherie. Not the lightness, not that ethereal delicacy. The Empress is mighty, more of a Galadriel than a Tinkerbell. Empress is strong and self-assured and powerful.

Popcorn, sweet and green strawberries, toffee with a strong hit of patchouly. Lasts very well, with great projection. I’m so glad I love!

Extraordinary scent composition:
Honey-sweet pear-rose (not Pi-like) + buttery-salty popcorn.
Fits Soki's radiant cheerful nature.

If it’s supposed to resemble Empress Miss Dior Cherie, then it must have been some unknown "édition popcorn extrême." Not nice otherwise.

Exciting scent, great longevity and sillage. Something nice for the evening that not everyone wears. I can smell popcorn :)

Not bad! The top note delights with an authentic butter caramel popcorn. The fruity-rosy background then becomes dominant.

For me, there's no resemblance to MD Cherie. I only smell very sweet, strawberry pear + popcorn + synthetic notes, reminds me of Treaclemoon shower gels :-(

The empress loves it sweet:
Realistic popcorn drizzled with honey-sweet toffee, sweet fruity strawberry mix;
later rosy with sweet patch.

I first smell more like butter than popcorn, and when the note fades, the scent is pretty much at its end.

2-day-old sweet-salty butter popcorn in patch sauce. Plus strawberry-pear pralines from Aunt Gerda. Lasts forever. Bottle is terrible, sorry!!
