Marrakesh??? Must have dozed off in geography class...
Along with my August Evening order, I had also ordered the sample kit from Negligé, and one of the included fragrances is Marrakesh. I would never have ordered this intrinsically; oriental scents with almost absolute certainty of vanilla, oud, incense, you name it, are just not my thing. So Marrakesh... without looking at the pyramid, I expect opulence, roses, warmth...
I am testing on paper and skin simultaneously. Unfortunately, the tester has no sprayer, so it’s dabbed on. The start is surprising and absolutely not what I would have expected from the name - it smells like mosquito repellent! I had generously applied it last night due to an open-air concert and unfortunately continued to breathe it in, mistake! This citron-eucalyptus combo clears everything up. With Marrakesh, I get verbena with mint! The reference paper sample also confirms this citrus-freshness. On my skin, there’s a slightly sweet note added, anise or licorice, while the paper is a bit more floral and slightly undefined.
The fresh top note fades in favor of something warm-herbaceous paired with wood. Ricola in the wooden sauna. Pleasant, aromatic, unisex... and somehow Nordic!
Wait, we were supposed to be traveling to Morocco, not Finland? Did I take a wrong turn? Because the scent fits much better in Scandinavia, where there are more mosquitoes than inhabitants, than in the warm North African regions. I’m now peeking at the fragrance pyramid and unfortunately can’t really confirm honey, spices, and flowers of any kind on my skin. The paper sample is more floral, but doesn’t have as strong a woody note. H/S is more in the middle range.
Marrakesh doesn’t blow me away, but I don’t find it really bad either. We agree on a peaceful draw, and I’m curious how it will be perceived by other perfume lovers.
