Marlene
It was one of those summer nights. Marlene moved away a bit from the garden shed, where the party was still in full swing. The laughter, growing fainter, mingled with the chirping of the crickets, and she sat down on the bench next to a man she had only briefly met at the party. There they sat, face to face with the clear starry sky, on their bench, in the small garden, away from the noise. For a moment, she looked at him - not long, but long enough for their gazes to meet for a moment. He smiled slightly. They didn’t say a word to each other, but in that smile was more than in all the other conversations at the party.
The cool evening air carried the scent of the man to her - a gentle sweetness, interwoven with warm spice and a hint of something unknown that captured her full attention for a moment. And even though she didn’t really know the man, a comforting feeling washed over her. She wanted to pour her heart out to him - to tell him what truly touched her. That she was no longer interested in the superficial conversations of the party. That she regretted giving up playing the piano.
That she is not alone after the loss of her best friend, yet still feels lonely.
All these thoughts raced through her mind, and she felt embraced by the strange perfume of the strange man.
