I was going to write a statement…
… but I exceed the character limit.

Starts off a bit too much like potpourri but after 30 minutes the dry down is divine. I was expecting some of the powdery iris which I love from l’Homme & iris cedre, but it doesn’t have either to my nose.

Quite feminine. I think I could still pull it off as a man, but I wouldn’t feel like wearing it often enough to justify a purchase. Can’t stop sniffing my arm though.

Scent
Not what I expected
Review is based off an official 1.5mL or 2mL tester of unknown age.

The orris, rose and jasmine combine to give the feeling of a vintage lady’s perfume to my nose - definitely not my jam. But if it was my jam, there’s probably a dozen Chanel or Guerlain perfumes with a similar vibe that I would prefer.

No wood or rum detected; maybe a bit of civet and oud hiding in the background.

Lasted about 5 hours. Not sure if it disappeared after this or I just went nose blind (normally I check with my wife, but she had a cold so no dice).

Disappointing really.

No comparisons to Versace The Dreamer?
I got samples of both of these at the same time and, despite very few shared notes and no one else drawing a comparison between them, I feel like this is an EDP flanker to Versace’s The Dreamer.

They are obviously different in the opening, but after 10 minutes they are very similar. Kenzo Power has a richer and more complex base against the tobacco leaf and light amber of The Dreamer. The scent is distinct when side by side, but I very much get the same vibe and I wouldn’t own both.

I like them both, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to work out which is better within my 2mL samples. I feel Kenzo Power is probably suitable for all ages, whereas The Dreamer feels more 35+ to me. Obviously the “scent has no age” believers can do whatever they like and all power to them. Kenzo is stronger and longer lasting.

Neither are blind-buy safe

I will probably buy The Dreamer purely because it’s 40% of the price where I am.

All this being said, as per my opening, no one else has made this comparison so perhaps it’s unique to my nose.

Victim of much confusion (and possibly reformulation)
It seems like Gucci by Gucci pour Homme is the victim of many misconceptions. Reviewers seem to confuse it with a multitude of other scents, it gets heavily criticised for its performance, and Parfumo has the wrong perfumer (I would fix it but if Aurélien Guichard can’t be bothered to claim it, then I won’t force it upon him).

My batch must be 2013; I purchased it after a girl I knew chased a man down the street to ask what he was wearing, and then she insisted on my buying it. The girl didn’t work out, but I continued to wear it for many years in the winter months. I never really had any issues with longevity - it doesn’t last a whole day at work, but it’ll get you 3/4 of the way there.

As to the smell, without breaking it down to notes, it’s a spicy, green and slightly woody fragrance. I’m not sure if my tastes have changed and I used to like it more, or if 12 years of improper storage have ended it, or simply smelling other top-quality fragrances have moved this down in the pecking order.

It’s still pleasant but inoffensive, a good office scent, and the Parfumo score of 6.9 is very harsh (it may have been reformulated and be worth such a score), but I have to admit that it’s not worth seeking out or buying.

Better than the bottle would make you think
Starts off slightly too sweet, and strongly of rose backed by geranium before the sweetness disappears after half an hour or so to bring saffron to the fore. The rose remains and there’s definitely some geranium and maybe even carnation as well.

This is backed by what I can only describe as a skanky musk which I presume comes from the oud, maybe with a touch of jasmine.

A bit of cinnamon and clove appears. Despite the comments online, I did not find it to be cinnamon bomb in the way that something like Spicebomb Infrared is.

Eventually it fades into a slightly woody soap.

Contrary to some other comments online, this doesn’t smell very similar at all to One Man Show Gold Edition, which is much sweeter and ambery and has no rose or saffron which are the dominant notes in this. This is vastly superior to the Gold in my opinion.

Definitely a winter scent in the subtropics where I live.

Not blind buy safe at all. Not office safe. Unlikely to be a young man’s clubbing scent. Probably wouldn’t wear it to a restaurant either. Basically for casual leisure in the cooler months.

Lack of versatility notwithstanding, there’s something about it that’s quite appealing.
