Chasing the dopamine high… the way of the fraghead?

With social media, we’ve become accustomed  to associating with like minded souls where we amplify our pleasure by echoing similar opinions, likes or dislikes.  Just like that and in few weeks, I went from a solo fragrance enthusiast to a member of a tribe, few tribes actually.  It’s awesome, I learned a lot and I met beautiful people who became my friends albeit electronically.

However, my real life friends and family cannot understand my hobby. They see that I cannot smell any nicer than I actually do right now and think I have too big a collection to be able to enjoy it or even to use it up before the fragrances go off. In fact, they see that I have a problem!  I suppose just like any hobby not to say addiction, this may lead to mild or serious levels of enabling.

Is it about loving fragrances? Or is it about chasing that high we experience when we  discovered our first niche fragrance? Are we simply hoarders?

Stop worrying i see nothing wrong with buying/collecting various fragrances. I have well over 100 bottles and i show no sign of stopping. I'm big on vintage scents and think the stuff made today is garbage. As long as u enjoy it and ur bills are getting paid then tell them to go pound sand

Today, I’m wearing material by amouage and it’s simply exquisite! Yesterday, was purple accento. I have thought of creating a rotation to make sure no perfume is neglected ;)

Absolutely spot on @Static!
At first you’re chasing the new scents, the various combinations of notes and accords. You’re building a database of flavours and sensations, then it kind of hits a plateau and you become a collector. Then, suddenly panic sets in!
I think sometimes, most times, I feel the need to downsize but as soon as I start to assemble a list and prepare to part with some creations I seem to reconnect with them. I remember the story behind each bottle et voilà ..

@TheBark, awesome line! Thank you for sharing.
I do feel this sometimes that I am spending far too much time on a hobby and sometimes it comes with a baseline of unexplained anxiety! Exactly, a fear of what it might be ;)

Today Its one million absolutely Gold. You live only once on this planet, enjoy it the full. Sometimes we get brainwashed by “ingrediënts” and “revieuws”, but eventually Its your feeling that guides you. I have a friend who has 400 perfumes, i only know that hé is proud of himself…his dopamine.
My dopamine lately? Red Tobacco Mancera💪🏾

That’s the beauty of it! First you want everything, always curious. But eventually like you said…if you have to much, how can we enjoy? Maybe if you get to that point you will be able to downsize your collection untill you finally come to 10-12 bottles that you realy love!
The “chasing” however is very enjoyable…untill your banc account tells you otherwise lol.
Today i realise that sometimes ..”less is more”. Last night went to dinner and had Roja Dove parfum de la Nuit 2 on…..

Perhaps because it's October, but this reminded me of Norman Bates in Hitchcock's Psycho saying "Well, this is more than a hobby. A hobby is supposed to pass the time, not fill it." There certainly is merit to the dopamine statement, that rush of anticipation and excitement is arguably the part that gets us hooked which, ironically, mirrors the psychology of good horror: it's not what it is that scares us; it's what we're afraid it MIGHT be and the anticipation of the unknown.

Well said Mikael, it is indeed an art form and it is absolutely beyond utility!
I’m always amazed when I stumble on a new fragrance that challenges my senses.

Fragrances is an art form, that can be enjoyed just like other art forms in large quantity and with big variety. Sure, for just utility, it would be enough with just ten fragrances, and most people don't even have that many. However, ask anybody interested in music, if that person would be satisfied with just ten records. But I guess we also chase a high, looking for that next hidden gem.
