The Abstraction of a Fragrance
So, I thought I’d write my first comment after clicking through here for quite some time. And since I consider JIL SANDER MAN to be a truly brilliant fragrance, I decided to dedicate this first comment to it.
In my opinion, JIL SANDER MAN does not come across like a normal fragrance. It is more the abstraction of a scent. I can agree with Apicius that JIL SANDER MAN creates a kind of aura around you, but I would even go a step further and describe JIL SANDER MAN as the abstraction of a fragrance.
You often hear terms like "simple elegance" or "less is more" or "the art of omission." However, these expressions are almost used inflationarily; these clichés are employed everywhere when a fragrance is a bit more subdued or (and often boring) smelling. Not only in terms of scent, but in the way it presents itself, JIL SANDER MAN is so simple that one should not remain on this level when trying to describe this creation.
With JIL SANDER MAN, the art of omission has elevated the fragrance to a new level, and now it’s about how one perceives it.
To put it more vividly: It is the shadow of a fragrance.
Somehow unreal, yet still present.
Oh, and regarding the bottle: It is quite plastic, but: It does emphasize (as anyone would have noticed) the simplicity of this fragrance.
And the name, as uninspired as it may seem, is actually well chosen here. The fragrance could have been called Jil Sander Men or pour homme or homme or whatever, but: By choosing the simplest version of a name, namely MAN in the singular and not Men in the plural or adding some pointless word, the simplicity is subtly, naturally, and logically honored once again.
