For the followers of ATH...
I can confess that I am a Unicorn. I have most of ATH's perfumes and have followed his work from the start.
I received a sample of Unicorn Extrait de Parfum with a purchase of Boss Bitch which I like very much. I am definitely going to get a bottle of Unicorn and the Unicorn Elixir.
Now, I know very well that ATH was hugely influenced by Tom Ford's fragrances. Particularly Black Orchid. This smells nothing like Black Orchid but does remind me a little of Oud Wood. Before you jump down my throat, I love Oud Wood when it was first released but now it is nothing like it used to be. This smells nicer and lasts far longer. Unicorn is different and unique in it's own way.
The scent is woody, spicy and slightly fruity. It's very masculine, not very unisex in my opinion. Unicorn is a night out perfume not a day scent. This blossoms in cold weather. Sillage is good, projection good and longevity is good. Not excellent like many of ATH's fragrances.
I keep sniffing myself and my girlfriend loves it, so that's enough for me. Definitely worth the money due to the high concentration of quality ingredients.
Thomas Burberry visiting Fortnum & Mason's in his own creation leather jacket for afternoon tea.
I'm a Londoner, live in West London to be precise. During the past 10 years of my fragrance journey, I have tried numerous fragrances from different houses trying to capture the essence of London in a bottle to varying levels of success.
Tom Ford (can't find the perfumer) launched London in 2013, described by many as capturing the dark and musty smell of the London Underground (Tube). I somewhat agree with this description but it was too cumin heavy for me. The Tube is "iconic" in London being the oldest in the world and played a massive role in WW2 to protect us Londoner's from the Blitz.
Burberry launched London in 2006 which instantly reminded me of my local pub (when you could smoke indoors). the old pubs of London are the best boozers in the world in my opinion.
Roja Dove's London 2017 (discontinued) is still one the best for me for many reasons. He's from London, has his flagship store in the Burlington Arcade (a London institution) and just captures the essence of a Londoner. A Londoner who enjoys spending money on luxuries he/she can't afford and then goes on a binge around the dark, narrow streets of SOHO with not a care in the world.
Now we come to Widian London. I have now purchased a bottle and for me to buy a full bottle of any perfume is rare and it's got to blow me away. I would like to point out that it says that the nose behind Widian London is Jordi Fernandez, but I have always thought it is Jean-Claude Astier? Perhaps someone can put me right on this?
Widian is from the UAE where many Londoners have there homes and vice-versa, so I forgive them for not being a London based house.
Unlike many of the interpretations of London done in the past. I feel this perfume depicts a Londoner (person) not the city itself, despite how Widian describes the fragrance. Perhaps it should have been called Widian Londoner?
This is a wealthy Londoner's perfume who enjoys the luxuries but also has a darkside.
The perfume is amazing. Lasts forever and being mad about leather fragrances is completely my cup of tea, It now sit's in pride and place next to Roja Dove's London. See you at Fortnum's for a cuppa...
OK! The DNA of this fragrance is similar, but...
I do not claim to have an immaculate nose, nor am I an accomplished reviewer. I only write reviews when I honestly feel I have something useful to say and try and be as accurate as I can.
Reviews on Parfumo have been very influential in helping me choose fragrances I might enjoy. I always take peoples reviews with a pinch of salt, but I have noticed that many people on here know what they are talking about, and have the same passion as I do.
Aaron Terence Hughes is a character, whether you like him or dislike him, he has created some very interesting perfumes. I'm mainly talking about his earlier days around 2019. Slut, Dirty Slut, Boss Bastard, Filth etc. I have been collecting his work since the beginning and have tried pretty much every perfume he's ever made. Some I like and some I dislike, but that would be the same for any perfume house I try. I don't buy full bottles of his perfumes just 10ml miniatures.
So, Supernova 10ml, I just bought direct from ATH during his Black Friday sale for £15.40 (a bargain). This included a 3ml sample of Unicorn one of his most expensive perfumes. I also bought Belle de Nuit, Boss Bitch, Midnight Fever, Blue Fever and Amazonia, they also came with free samples. Unfortunately, most of the samples were of perfumes I already have in my collection, but he is generous with handing out free samples.
Supernova is a very safe, commercial and people friendly fragrance. Reading the reviews of this fragrance on this site and others. It is being compared to Cedrat Boise, Hacivat, Aventus and Elysium. Ok, I have and have had all of these and they are all unique in their own way. Aventus, was good but is now just over-priced scented water. Hacivat, I still love. Cedrat Boise, especially the intense version is great in the summer and cheap. Elysium Parfum is still my all time favourite but is eye watering in price. Supernova shares some DNA to all of these yes. But it is still unique in it's own way.
I'm not going to bang on about what notes I can smell or how the top, middle and base notes blend together etc. I will leave that to people who know what they are talking about.
Supernova smells great for the majority of it's life. It lasted on me a good 10+ hours but I will say the last few hours of the fragrance are not particularly nice. It smells a little off and rather synthetic. ATH does use a lot of high quality ingredients but he is a chemist after all, so his perfumes use a lot of aroma chemicals too.
The sillage and projection are great too. especially in the first few hours of it's development on my skin. It's not one of ATH's mad chemist concoctions which drew me to him.
I totally recommend Supernova but I do worry that ATH is going down the safe, copycat, commercial and people friendly route like so many houses today. I hope to see more of his challenging and charismatic fragrances in the near future.
Ombre Leather Review in Plural
How many perfumes is Tom Ford going to churn out this year?, I ask myself. Should I also ask: how many perfumes are Estee Lauder going to butcher this year? That is more to the point.
I have stopped buying Tom Ford perfumes full stop. They are nothing like they used to be. Way overpriced and of poor quality. Having had over 50 different TF perfumes in my collection over the years dating back to 2007. It has made me conscious of how much of a change there has been in quality, direction, pricing, uniqueness and strength of TF fragrances.
Anyway with that said. This is about Ombre Leather, not just this EDT but all of them. I think it fair to say there are massive differences between them, but they are all from the same line.
If you have ever had the privilege to have had Ombre leather 16 (2016), then you will know what I am talking about. It had massive projection and longevity. It was smooth leather done to perfection. I sadly used the last few drops a couple of months ago and miss it dearly. Although it was an EDP it felt like a Parfum.
So when TF launched the parfum version in 2021. I jumped at the chance to buy a bottle. I didn't even sample it before. I should have not been such an idiot to be honest. I ended up not liking it at all. It reminded me of an unfinished perfume, similar to the launch of Oud Wood Intense. That was a disaster. I haven't tried Oud Wood Parfum yet, but what I read on Parfumo so far about it supports what I'm trying to say here.
This EDT is nice don't get me wrong. Much nicer than the Parfum. I could wear it on a daily basis but to be honest, the bottle wouldn't last long due to having to reapply it so often. I don't usually purchase EDT concentration but I can make exceptions.
The best since Ombre Leather 16 is the EDP launched in 2018. It was a bit weaker than the first but still had good longevity and projection. I would buy another bottle because I adore leather scents. The price point for the EDP is spot on and value for money which is a first for TF.
So to sum up. This is obviously my opinion and I completely respect all others.
From best to worst:
Ombre Leather 16 is 9/10 (If you can find a bottle it's a must for leather lovers)
Ombre Leather EDP is 8/10
Ombre Leather EDT is 7/10
Ombre Leather Parfum is 6/10.
A very nice fragrance but I shouldn't have read the reviews.
I received a 30ml of this for my birthday. I have read a lot of reviews about Ganymede and was looking for a nice, powerful, long lasting perfume for the evenings.
I was really excited to try this and add it to my evening perfume collection. According to how it has been rated and reviewed on this site, I was expecting wow.
This is very nice but it plays very close to the skin. It's very fresh, not what I expected from a woody-spicy fragrance. To be honest it's rather weak. I expected to smell it wafting up my nose from my clavicle, but I literally have to put my nose in my shirt to smell it.
I know many popular perfumes tend to get watered down once popular and while trying to keep up to demand. Not sure if that's the case here, but rating this with longevity and sillage 10/10 is ridiculous.
This has weak projection and is a faint skin scent after a few hours. It's nice and certainly lovely to sniff perhaps alone watching the TV. But not one that's going to wow the crowds while out with friends. Unless your in bed with them lol.
