Love at First Scent
It all started when I became aware of the legendary topic of niche fragrances through some videos by Kai Porten and Marc Gebauer. So, after weeks of research and spending hours on Parfumo and YouTube exploring the world of niche perfumes, I decided to visit a perfume shop for the first time to understand what makes them special. I drove to Frankfurt full of enthusiasm, and after a few moments, I found myself in the Albrecht Parfümerie in Myzeil. Just seeing all these scents, which somehow felt familiar to me from all the research in the past weeks but were completely unknown at the same time, made my heart soar. I immediately decided to venture into niche houses like Xerjoff and Mfk and test a variety of fragrances. I started with classics like Br540, grand Soir, Accento, and Erba Pura. Don’t get me wrong, all fantastic scents, but at that moment, none of these four blew me away. Then it caught my eye. I recognized it from a video by Kai. “Could you please spray that on for me?” I asked the saleswoman, as is customary in most high-end perfumeries. I waved the test strip back and forth a few times, and under the expectant and somewhat annoyed gaze of the perfumer, I finally brought it to my nose. That was it. This is what I had imagined under the term “niche perfume.” Exactly that! What an incredibly sweet, delicious, fruity scent, with a woody, spicy note that gives it a certain something. I could literally feel how the fragrance developed on the test strip and how, after the fruity sweet opening, it grew into a sweet vanilla-apple composition. After smelling the tester for quite a while, I couldn’t help but ultimately buy it. Now, about a month and several perfumeries later, it is still one of the best scents I have had the pleasure of experiencing. Layton is one of the few where I was sure after just one second: “THIS IS IT!” What can I say, love at first scent… ;)
