Blast from the past

I had a good sniff of Samsara last night and now I am absolutely sure I have smelled it before, somewhere, some time ago in my childhood. Now I'm really haunted by who wore it? when? where would I have encountered it? In my relatively poor rural community few people would have had fragrance beyond Alyssa Ashley or Yves Rocher at all during the 80s and 90s, especially the 90s. But I KNOW I have smelled this before.

One more of these little things I can't ask my grandmother about any more.

I am still trying to duplicate certain scent memories from the past. Those scents are like "stuck" in the brain. Sometimes, a current perfume comes close. Then I say, "Ah, that's a nice perfume!" when it is somehow close to those elusive memories. I can't explain it.

Yeah, it is strange how some scents or notes are associated with events and things in our memories and then later surface in a perfume that wasn't even around back then :) My grandmother is still alive but ill with a nasty form of Parkinson's and her memory gets worse by the day. It's kind of heartbreaking. I'm nearly 30 and she has been a big part of my life for so long, I can't imagine what it will be like when she's no longer around.

What a lovely wistful post. It makes me think of the things I can't ask my grandmother like her borscht recipe and what did her mother look like... I have had a couple of scents that seem to trigger childhood memories. One of them is Sacrebleu - obviously wasn't around when I was a child but there is something oddly familiar about it that makes it addictive and comforting.
