The secrets of oak wood beckon so sweetly
Serge Lutens is a house rather well-known for its artistry and uniquely defined compositions. Many of the fantastic offerings by Serge Lutens can be attributed to the nose of Christopher Sheldrake, including the often underappreciated masterpiece, Chêne.
Time and time again, Serge Lutens proves that perfumery is more than just art, but an experience. Despite loving multiple of their offerings from the tolls of life's own eleventh hour in De profundis, to the darker tones of a more abrasive white flower in Sarrasins, nothing has spoken to me quite like Chêne has.
Woods, an oak forest. Aged oak, surrounded by it. Strong winds carry a fragrant sharpness, something dry, medicinal. Secrets are hidden within, so naturally, secrets of sweetness. Honeyed, resinous, smoky sweetness. The sweetness of rum, rum in oak, an aged oak barrel. You're in the woods, surrounded by nothing but oak trees, yet wafts of that alluring sweetness hit you. You're lost, and maybe you won't find your way out from here, but what you will find, is the beauty hidden within Chêne.
