"Amber" and ambroxan

"Amber" and ambroxan 2

I experience ambroxan as a strong, harsh, astringent, synthetic scent that goes into my mouth. It ruins perfumes and I want to make sure others who experience it like I do can know to avoid it.

If a perfume is listed as having "amber" and I detect it as ambroxan, can I propose to change "amber" to "ambroxan"? Or propose it as an additional note, perhaps?

The notes listings on here must be based on promotional materials from the house/brand itself and the mods and admins are quite strict about this. If the brand claims that the fragrance has an amber note, that's what it's going to be listed on Parfumo. I understand the frustration but the notes listing can't be based on individual users' feelings.

@Deerhound since fragrance is subjective and varies between each person, the notes list would constantly change if every user submitted edits to reflect what they felt a fragrance smelled like to them individually - rather than keeping what the brand officially lists.

This is where I find that the "Statements" and "Reviews" sections help. A brand can list any notes they want to, but I rely on the experiences of those who have tested the fragrance to get a better idea of it. Examples:

Bombshell Magic claims blackberry, but smells like juniper berry to me - so I mentioned that in the review I left
Açai Baie smells like melons, despite no melon note being listed
...etc.

I'm with you on disliking the synthetic feel of ambroxan. I appreciate when users caution about any offensive or misleading notes, so I'm sure others will also be thankful for any insights you can share in your own reviews/statements!

Makes sense, thanks for your reply.

What about when the company itself says it contains ambroxan but Parfumo says "ambergris", for example Aventus or Green Irish Tweed? (Though happily I didn't find it particularly bothersome when sampling those.)

Aside from such cases, I completely understand and thank you for the explanation.

@Deerhound of course! Anytime I catch an error like that, I just submit a "Revision" proposal. Here are some screenshots to show how to do it.

I make sure to always include 1) the screenshot of the brand's page where they mention the correct note, and 2) the URL for this page (you'll see a "Sources" page after hitting "Submit" where you can enter this info). More research submission guidelines can be found here.

Then you wait for it to be approved - or if there are any problems with your sources, the research admin/mods will let you know. You can check on the status of your research submissions/revisions under the "Research" tab at the top of any Parfumo page.
